Review Fix Exclusive: Altered By Mom’s Devon Lougheed Talks ‘Hear That Sound’ And More

Review Fix chats with Altered By Mom’s Devon Lougheed who discusses the band’s origin and new track, “Hear That Sound.”

Review Fix: How did the band get together?

Devon Lougheed: Altered By Mom started as an excuse for producer/songwriter Devon Lougheed to play with some of his favourite musicians from all across Canada, but really took shape with the permanent addition of Gina Kennedy (bass/vocals) and Jamie Williamson (drums). We met Jamie through the bartering group Bunz Trading Zone… so I guess there’s a freewheeling hippie element in our very DNA.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Lougheed: Generally one of the band’s songwriters brings a skeleton of an idea to the table, and those are fleshed-out through rehearsals and live performances. We also do a lot of recording, demoing, and sound design, creating lots of options fairly uncritically, then sharpening and honing that until it feels just right.

Review Fix: What inspires you?

Lougheed: We’re inspired by a cacophony of elements… Terry Crews, Andy Kaufman, Jennie Trout, the tension between art and capitalism, Fugazi, Beavis and Butthead, Yolandi Visser. We especially love art and music that is high quality but not so serious, even comedic.

Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?

Lougheed: We sound like the Barenaked Ladies on a bender through a fuzz pedal, or like Ween scoring a romantic comedy. We sound like the best bits of 90s influence with a contemporary sound and timeless songwriting… we hope.

Review Fix: How was “Hear That Sound” written?

Lougheed: ‘Hear That Sound” was written to try and divine answers from a sea of questions in the aftermath of the breakup of a long-term relationship. It’s for anyone who has felt lonely in the midst of a crowd.

Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?

Lougheed: Our live shows follow the mantra of “organized chaos”, and are designed to be an entertainment event from start to finish. In the studio, we focus much more on sounds and songwriting, which I guess makes sense. Our goal in the studio is to create songs that can be the soundtrack to important and formative moments in people’s lives, just as there are songs that have been so perfectly matched to the important and formative moments in ours.

Review Fix: What are your goals for the rest of 2019?

Lougheed: We’d like to get more involved in videos and visual media, and collaborate with many more artists and creators.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Lougheed: We are releasing our new album, TRAPPED IN AN MP3, and hope to continue to create interesting live shows and happenings while getting our songs stuck in your head. Also, we’d like to give you a big hug or fist-bump (up to you).

Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?

Lougheed: We’d like to create a mutual feedback kindness loop with other artists — if you’d like us to check out your song, send us some thoughts about “Hear That Sound” and a link to your song to [email protected] and we’ll tell you what we dig about it!
