Review Fix Exclusive: Rhia Talks ‘Fire’ And More

Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Rhia, who breaks down the creative process behind her new single, “Fire.’

Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?

Rhia: I started teaching myself vocals when I was about 4 or 5, I used to sing along to my Mum’s favorite songs on vinyl and the record myself on a tape player, and then listen back to try and improve. From there I started voice lessons, as well as drums, keys, bass and guitar. At ten I started getting booked by Australian Idol to do sessions as a background vocalist and I was also being hired as lead for sessions and shows by that time. I kept developing and my career grew from there.

Review Fix: What makes you unique?

Rhia: Potentially my personal experiences and how they relate to my artistry and music, I feel like we all have a story though. But I think as a pop artist, songwriter and engineer perhaps those specific experiences are what bring substance and depth to my music and help to set it apart.

Review Fix: What was it like to work with Samuel PK Smith? How did he make you better?

Rhia: It was good! His production complimented the song really well and he made decisions that I otherwise wouldn’t have made. He’s very good at what he does. As a co-production effort it was easy to collab despite the fact that we were in other countries and I’m grateful that it turned out so well.

Review Fix: What are your goals in music?

Rhia: I’ll be releasing more songs and I’m doing a lot of different solo projects as collabs with different producers and duos. I’m really excited for them to come out. There are also US show and tour dates coming up which I can’t wait to announce. My goal is to keep building. I’d like to get to a point where my music would be considered and recognized by the Recording Academy, and my long term goal is to use my platform to contribute to positive change for the issues which are close to my heart and are important to me.

Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?

Rhia: A producer I’ve been collaborating with, Adam Deitch, recently called it soulful hip-hop inspired electro pop. It’s ambient and feeling-based, and ‘Fire.’in particular is rhythmic, cinematic and empowering.

Review Fix: Why do your tunes matter?

Rhia: The reception they have received has been overwhelming and knowing that it genuinely hits home for my listeners is incredibly humbling. That to me means that people are taking something positive from it and that’s what makes them matter in my opinion. If someone feels strength from listening to my song I’m on the right path.

Review Fix: How was “Fire” written?

Rhia: I found the melody by doing passes on my mic at home, it was mostly vowels but I think “you say you’ll ride the wave” came out then, and once I felt excited about the melody I began to write the lyrics. At a certain point I re-wrote lyrics of the song because it wasn’t quite communicating what I was feeling. I just felt like it wasn’t the right direction. But on the third go it felt right. When it felt ready I asked for feedback from friends and the people I work with, and it was very positive. From there I went into the studio in Melbourne to track the vocals and the rest is history!

Review Fix: What’s next?

For my solo work I have a release coming out with Break Science shortly and a few songs with Adam Deitch which I’m excited about. More songs with Samuel PK Smith and another amazing producer called Jorel Corpus. I’m also going to be releasing songs with Sam Barsh, as well as with Borham Lee soon too, and I have lots of live shows coming up, with details to be announced shortly

I’m also going to be doing a music video for â€œFire.” very soon too! I have songs coming out in the next year which I have written for other Artists as well.

Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?

Yes! A choreo video for “Fire.” came out today! Kash Powell was the choreographer and it featured 15-year-old Samuel Garcia, Enya and Pearl Leary. These guys are from the UK and I can’t stop watching it. They created and filmed the video in 30 minutes and it was done in one take. It’s incredible. Please check it out here to show them some love:
