Snow, Glass, Apples Review: Snow White For a New Era

“Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” has been made in so many different ways that there are even gritty versions of it. Of course, it is possible to make a gritty version of “Snow White” garbage and it’s also possible to make it great. Neil Gaiman has made an amazing one called “Snow, Glass, Apples” and artist Colleen Doran has adapted that story into comic form.

the story is through the point of view of the queen. Here, she paints the picture that Snow White is some kind of deranged monster who drinks human blood. The queen had her killed and her heart cut out, but the heart still beats. Not to mention that there’s a festival that takes place every year in the kingdom and the queen thinks the reason for the fey folk stop coming little by little every year is due to Snow White.

The main reason the storytelling is so strong is that the way the queen narrates grabs the reader by the heart keeps the reader on the edge of their seats and doesn’t let go. There is so much passion put into each word that the reader feels that this is actually the queen writing every word. We can feel her sadness, anger and fear which is the mark of a brilliant writer.

If the writing didn’t amaze you, the artwork will. While there are some panels, Doran decided to use items such as trees, arms clothes to be proto panels. With that in mind, the is a ton of detail in every page right down to clothing designs, naked bodies, trees and even entire rooms right down to the most minute detail. The pages look more like Renaissance-era paintings than pages in a comic. Even the colors are vibrant. This comic will make your eyes not want to look at anything else because everything looks bland in comparison.

Neil Gaiman’s ‘Snow, Glass, Apples” is a great story with great writing and the art from the comic only makes this story that much better. This comic will please not only Gaiman fans but comic book and fans of fairy tales.
