STRAIGHT FROM ACTION LAB: HERALD: LOVECRAFT & TESLA – BUNDLES OF JOY #1

Creator/writer John Reilly continues his historical mash-up of HERALD: LOVECRAFT & TESLA in the fourth volume of the series, BUNDLES OF JOY, which can be enjoyed by longtime fans and new readers! The story combines magic, weird technology, the Cthulhu mythos, conspiracies, and luminaries from the 1920s in a pulp serial adventure ala Indiana Jones, Buffy, and Lost. SciFiPulse says it’s “An excellent combination of real people in blasphemous situations with fun visuals.”

In this volume, when Amelia Earhart disappears over the Atlantic, her fiance Nikola Tesla teams up with HP Lovecraft to find the Necronomicon and prevent the cult of Cthulhu from ending the world. John Reilly adds that “HERALD’S details, cast, and myriad storylines reward repeat reading across a narrative in which everything matters.” He goes on to say, “I want readers to get excited for a history adventure and the possibilities of America’s spurious mythology” and “Surviving your adulthood is like surviving a horror story. HERALD is that story.”

Illustrator Tom Rogers went into detail about his experience drawing this volume:Illustrating BUNDLES OF JOYwas a, uh, bundle of joy! Receiving the script for a new issue of Herald is always exciting. While John has shared the broader series outline with me, it’s still a wild ride to see how the individual events play out and watch the characters evolve along the way.

“Since I love the story so much, my goal then as an artist is to make sure the art can live up to the quality of the script. There were lots of exciting scenes in this story arc and (I very humbly think) some of the coolest pages I’ve ever drawn. Also, I couldn’t pull it off nearly as well without Dexter Weeks’s spectacular colors which really complement my drawings and the tone of the story astoundingly well.”

He went on to tease: “Without delving into too many spoilers, working on BUNDLES OF JOYwas a particularly memorable experience because my wife was pregnant while I was drawing it. Essentially, while my daughter was in the womb, I was drawing a comic about monster babies. Luckily for us, our baby turned out to be the cutest monster ever. I know it’s been a while since our last volume, but I hope it will be worth the wait for our new and long-time readers. I’m excited to get cracking on the next book!”

Multiversity Comics says “If you have any affection for the historical names involved, give this one a chance to surprise you with an even deeper experience.” Join these historical figures on their extraordinary adventures in HERALD: LOVECRAFT & TESLA – BUNDLES OF JOY #1, which will be available in a comic book store near you on August 7th, 2019.
