Review Fix Exclusive: Micki Maverick Talks ’Sedated’ and More

Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Micki Maverick who discusses her origin in music, as well as her creative process and debut EP.

Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?

Micki Maverick: Music has always been a part of my life. My dad is a musician and I’ve grown up listening to records with him and going to his gigs. I started my journey with music in High School, that’s when I met my current producer Braddokk aka c.m.scott on Soundcloud, but I got way too deep in my head and convinced myself I wasn’t good enough and completely ghosted him. So I stopped for years, then the itch started itching again and I picked back up writing songs. Last summer I released a really poorly made cover with an awful mic to my Soundcloud and c.m.scott happened to hear it! He reached out to me and we picked back up where we left off and started to really develop the EP.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Maverick: A lot of the time I write as a form of therapy. I struggle a lot with my mental health and for me music is like the one thing that never fails to lift me out of my darkest spaces. The most fulfilling thing in the world for me is sitting outside with my notebook and headphones and just writing.

Review Fix: What inspires you?

Maverick: I feel like my music is really inspired by two things. One of which is my girlfriend. I kid you not this chick is the hardest working person I know, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to be with her forever. I look at how hard she works to achieve her dreams and it just fuels me to do the same. Another big inspiration for me stems from my coming out in High School. Kehlani was probably the only openly LGBTQIA public figure I knew of, and for a closeted kid going to an all-girls Catholic High School seeing her thrive and hearing her music was huge for me. Knowing how much she affected my life just through her music really motivates me to do the same. I really hope my music gets to the ears of people who really need to hear it.

Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?

Maverick: I would say my sound is like a fusion of a bunch of different genres. I can Mose closely relate it to pop and r&b, but there are hints of soul in there as well as some rap tones.

Review Fix: What inspired your latest single?

Maverick: Sedated is really heavily inspired by my own life and my struggle with my mental health. The concept of hope a lot of the time is really hard for me, and I fight back and forth within myself about it. Hope is such a fleeting thing, one minute it’s here and going full force and the next it seems like its completely gone. Its never really gone though, and that’s the point I wanted to make with this song. You never really lose hope, sometimes you can’t see it but its always still there.

Review Fix: What are your goals for the rest of 2019?

Maverick: Ooh let me tell you we have got LOTS in store for 2019. I am so excited to keep sharing my art and I am so excited to say that my goal is to release new music monthly! 2019 has been a really huge year for me and I’m just so excited to keep creating and sharing.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Maverick: We currently have about 30 unreleased tracks that I am so excited to be working and releasing throughout the rest of 2019. 2020 is already in the works as well, we’re in the beginning stages of putting together a super sick mix tape that we’re hoping to get out around February. I’m just super excited, I really want to dive deeper into my craft and create so much more.

Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?

Maverick: We’re working to secure some live shows in 2020. I’ve found myself really craving the human connection that comes with live shows, and I seriously can’t wait to start performing! I want every one of my shows to feel like a family reunion, big loud and full of love!
