Hellboy and the B.P.R.D: Long Night at Goloski Station One-Shot Review: Bar Room Blitz

Mike Mignola continues his long-running series “Hellboy and the B.P.R.D” with the one-shot “Long Night At Goloski Station” with artist Matt Smith. The blub makes it seem like it’s just a bar room brawl, but there’s more to this story that can be called OK. Hellboy finds himself somewhere in Russia looking for Professor Onchukov. He instead finds a guy who apparently has been living for a very long time. He also finds a warlock who is controlling two demons who are after him. This comic creates a rather interesting new character who seems like he’ll be important in a future story. This character’s background sounds like it’ll be a lot of fun and can cause loads of trouble for Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. The rest of the comic is OK. There is one big brawl that lasts for a little bit but it does end the way it should. What the two demons say does bring up some interesting ideas that could lead to discovering more about Hellboy and other demons. Matt Smith’s artwork brings out the best out of “Hellboy.” The character designs are nice and crisp and the backgrounds look amazing. Since the comic talks about the time Hellboy fought the Baba Yaga, the Baba Yaga shown here doesn’t particularly match up to the rest of the artwork. There’s also the brawl. Not much can be said about the brawl, but the confrontation between the guy and the warlock is perfect. It has the right kind of atmosphere and the action that takes place between the two works well from a storytelling perspective. “Hellboy and the B.P.R.D: Long Night at Goloski Station” is an OK one-shot that sets up what could be an interesting multi-issue story. The new character sounds interesting and the artwork is some of the best in this series despite some mediocre panels.
