Review Fix Exclusive: Kara Frasier Talks ‘Lovesick’ And More

Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Kara Frasier, who discusses her origin in music, creative process and goals for her new single, “Lovesick.”

Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?

Kara Frazier: Music has been in my bones since I can remember. I used to dance and sing to Christina Aguilera’s “Genie in a Bottle” at the top of my lungs with a kitchen chair as my stage! I fell in love with jazz and classic soul like Nina Simone and Ray Charles, then discovered modern artists like Alicia Keys and that’s what inspired me to start singing. I started voice lessons and was singing 3-4 hours a day, then started entering singing competitions in Florida. Eventually, I learned piano and began writing my own songs.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Kara Frazier: I usually think of a vocal melody in my head or some sort of lyric concept to build the song from. Then I take the melody to my piano and see what other ideas come. Sometimes I write a song in a day, sometimes it takes a year or more to finish. It really just depends on the complexity or simplicity of what I’m trying to say. I write wherever I’m feeling inspiration – in the car, on a plane, occasionally in a dream.

Review Fix: What inspires you?

Kara Frazier: Real life pain and experiences. In my opinion, there’s nothing like tapping into real emotion to create art that moves people.

Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?

Kara Frazier: The best way I can describe my sound is Americana-soul with a modern R&B flare. I love blending genres because it fuels my creativity!

Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?

Kara Frazier: I think there’s an element of personal expression that goes into the performance from the talented musicians I play with live. Studio sessions can tend to feel a little more “planned” which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it offers a different listening experience than a live set. I personally love playing live because I discover new things about my voice and the meaning of the songs every time.

Review Fix: What inspired your latest single?

Kara Frazier: “Lovesick” was inspired by a super personal relationship in my life and not only the frustration, but the eventual freedom and empowerment I felt in the situation. My co-writer and producer on the song, Jared Conrad, helped me the message I wanted to get across into lyrics. The song is about being able to speak your mind and hold someone accountable for the truth that you were important to each other at one point, even if things didn’t end well.

Review Fix: What are your goals for the rest of 2019?

Kara Frazier: The rest of 2019 will be spent writing and recording in the studio. 2020 is going to be a year full of releases and shows, so these next few months will be a season of creativity.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Kara Frazier: I have several singles and visuals lined up for release in the coming months. In the spring of 2020, I’ll be returning to my hometown, Jacksonville, to play Blue Jay Listening Room on April 17th where I played a sold-out show this year. I plan to continue tapping into my fanbase to get to know them better and give them music they can fall in love with.

Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?

Kara Frazier: I’m thankful for this opportunity and always blown away by the support I receive on new releases. It makes pursuing a career in a tough industry more than worth it!
