Review Fix Exclusive: Emily Daccarett Talks ‘Cannibal And More

Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Emily Daccarett, who discusses the creation process for her new EP and goals for 2020.

Review Fix: How did the project start?

Emily Daccarett: I started out as a fashion designer and have had runway shows in Paris Fashion Week, LAFW, and New York Fashion Week. With my collections, I produced fashion films and worked with a film composer, S. Peace Nistades on original music for my shorts. I have always loved singing and performing, but I put it aside to pursue my education in fashion design. After working on these songs for my shows, I felt a desire to learn how to produce my own songs and develop my sound. I enrolled in the Musicians Institute in LA and began to work/discover my craft. Cannibal is my debut ep as a musical artist, and it blends my love of film, fashion, and music.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Daccarett: I’m such a curious cat and constantly researching anything and everything I come across. Once I find something, I’m obsessed with I’ll start putting together a mood board and look for patterns within the visuals to create a story. For me, the words usually come first and after I have a few lines down, I’ll start to put together a beat. I’m a visual person and I try to translate the colors, texture, and mood I see and feel into the music.

Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?

Daccarett: Cannibal is the most popular song in my EP. I wrote it in the heat of the moment and within a few minutes, I had the first verse of the song. It was so therapeutic and after I was done, I felt at peace with the situation and myself. Cannibal is about not letting fears and concerns we have in a relationship can consume us and turn us into self-inflicting cannibals.

Review Fix: What are your goals for 2020?

Daccarett: My goal is to reach a wider audience and to follow up my EP with an album. To perform more acoustic shows around LA, something intimate and reminiscent to underground cabarets of the ‘70s in Paris. I want to collaborate with other artists on new music.

Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?

Daccarett: I want people to feel a sort of escapism when listening to my music. The songs have a cinematic flair that transports people into the story.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Daccarett: In 2020 I plan to debut an activewear line that features the anime-inspired characters I created as mascots for each song in my EP. I’ll be releasing new songs and produce a couple of music videos to further the narrative of Cannibal. The order of the songs takes you through a journey that ends where we started. The idea is to have these music videos follow a linear storyline.
