Review Fix Exclusive: Jeremiah Kipp Talks ‘Perfect’

Review Fix chats with filmmaker Jeremiah Kipp, who discusses his new short horror film, “Perfect.”

Review Fix: What inspired this film?

Jeremiah Kipp: I had previously worked with actress Ashley Tyler on the nasty vampire feature THERESA & ALLISON, and she approached me with this concise and nasty script called PERFECT.  Once we decided to collaborate, a few weeks later the cameras were rolling.  I think she was intrigued by the screwed up motivations of the main character, all done in the name of love and romance.

Review Fix: How is it different from your previous films?

Kipp: I’ve always loved Frankenstein-inspired narratives, but having the creator be female and setting the tale in the grim dating scene in New York City felt like an original take on an old myth.

Review Fix: How hard is it to tell a story like this in 10 mins?

Kipp: The length felt right for what we were doing, essentially building to one major resolution and a horrifying realization.  Ashley is developing a feature length version even as we speak, where the character will have more to deal with. I’m sure it will be just as morbid.

Review Fix: What was casting like?

Kipp: Ashley was on board as the lead, and together we picked out a handful of talented guys to fill out the supporting cast who weren’t afraid of getting covered in blood or getting naked.  The most specific casting choice was Logan Roberts, who had to have striking blue eyes.  He’s a terrific actor, able to play charming and comfortable in his own skin and a little sneaky.  The ideal candidate to be lured into our venus fly trap.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Kipp: We’re currently in post on the feature length version of SLAPFACE starring August Maturo, Mike C. Manning and Dan Hedaya from BLOOD SIMPLE.  It’s wonderful to collaborate with a veteran actor who was in a movie that inspired me to make movies.  All of the cast and crew were thoughtful, nuanced and there for the movie. We look forward to sharing our work with audiences this year.

Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?

Kipp: SLAPFACE showed me that you can make a proof-of-concept short film and that can lead to producers finding you and helping you make the feature length.  I know Ashley has that plan for PERFECT, too, and I can’t wait to see where that goes.
