Review Fix Exclusive: Juan Espinosa Talks ‘Adventures of a System Admin: Rubber Ducky’

Review Fix chats with comic book scribe, Juan Espinosa to find out what inspired his latest comic, “Adventures of a System Admin: Rubber Ducky” and his upcoming Kickstarter for it.

Review Fix: What inspired this comic?

Juan Espinosa: A couple of reasons. One was the fact that I always wanted to be a character in a comic book so I contacted Hackerstrip to draw me as a “Cartoon”. Afterwards I went to Kids Comic Con at Bronx Community College and bought the book “The Art of Making Comics” by Alex Simmons. Once I read the book I decided to start making my own comic. The topic came about since when I was going to comicbooks stores asking for Technology based comics, there were none and I’m a real System Admin the concept came natural to me. 

Review Fix: How is it different from your previous work?

Espinosa: Actually this is my first try at making comics. I have been doing it for only 2 years and this is my fourth issue and my second Kickstarter. I will be doing another serie that goes by Mythology Stories: Galipote which will come out in the summer of 2020. 

Review Fix: What makes this comic special?

Espinosa: This comic is special because it shows the real life of a System Admin. I present real tools on the comic that can be use in real life to protect yourself or mitigate an attack from a hacker. People could learn stuff that theh can use in their day to day. 

Review Fix: What creators do you think have influenced you the most?

Espinosa: There are a lot of creators that have influenced me and keep influencing today. 

Alex Simmons is a person that I have read almost all his books. I have taken workshops with him about writing and he has been a wonderful friend that have taken from his time to spend talking to me about writing. Alex is the writer and creator of Blackjack, he has also worked for Archie and DC Comics to mention a few. 

Greg Anderson Elysée has also been influential on the way he craft his work and all the great advise he has given me. He is the writer and creator of Is’ nana The Were-Spider as well as a couple of other amazing books. 

Review Fix: How do you want it to be remembered?

Espinosa: I want people to remember this book as real life stories in which they can relate. Family issues, work related issues, jealousy and hate. A funny tale of a System Admin that believe it or not is a real life superhero in his own way. You always need a tech person to save your files, recover others and so on.  

Review Fix: What’s next?

Espinosa: My next step is making this Kickstarter campaign successful. Final touches on the dialogue on the first issue for the Mythology Stories which is 98% completed. Start the dialogue for issue 5 of Adventures of a System Admin as the plot is already set.  The first arc for Adventures of a System Admin will end on issue 6  but we will continue with the second arc as soon as the first ends.
