Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?

Garrison Starr: I grew up singing and playing in church but have always been writing songs and singing for as long as I can remember. There’s never been anything else I wanted to do.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Starr: It kind of depends on whether I’m co-writing or writing alone. I tend to take a little more time writing my own songs, but when I’m in a session there’s more pressure to finish a song in a day.

Review Fix: What inspires you?

Starr: Authenticity, discipline, focus, true artistry

Review Fix: What does music mean to you?

Starr: Music saved my life, so it means everything.

Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?

Starr: Female Tom Petty

Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?

Starr: Well, I mostly tour solo acoustic, so I’d say the main difference would be that my records aren’t always as stripped down. Though my new record, due out this year, sounds more organic than some of my others.

Review Fix: What inspired your latest single, “Nothing Without You”?

Starr: Sean brought the chorus in, and we finished the song with him. I’m not sure what initially inspired him, but what the song means to me is having somebody in your life who always has your back. Somebody you can’t live without. I feel a lot of gratitude in that song.

Review Fix: What are your goals for 2020?

Starr: To be more loving, more forgiving and to be able to do a handstand in yoga by the end of the year!

Review Fix: What’s next?

Starr: Houston!

Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?

Starr: Happiness is an inside job.
