Review Fix Exclusive: Kinkora Talks ‘Set Me Free’ And More

Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Kinkora, who discusses her creative process and more.

Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?

Kinkora: I grew up writing songs and learning to sing by copying my favourite artists alone in my bedroom! I also played the piano from a young age so that definitely provided the foundation of my musical knowledge. Eventually I worked up the confidence to start releasing my songs and here we are today!

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Kinkora: I go through different creative cycles – sometimes I’ll just write when I’m feeling inspired (like when I’m more focused on the business side of my music) and at other times I’ll make a concerted effort to write every day, no matter what. Writing every day is definitely the ideal process for me because I feel like I’m constantly tapped in to that channel and the flow is much easier to access.

When I write, I usually just sing out loud and see what comes out. I tend not to plan anything out and find it kind of exciting to see what I’m really feeling via whatever I end up saying! I’ll either write on a guitar, piano or to a track.

Review Fix: What inspires you?

Kinkora: Life! My experiences, other people’s experiences, relationships, the state of the world, other music!

Review Fix: What does music mean to you?

Kinkora: The relationship I have with music is really sacred to me and has provided me with so much fulfilment and joy throughout my life. In particular, the songwriting process is the most amazing outlet and a connection to a deeper sense of myself.

Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?

Kinkora: My music is a mix of RnB, disco, soul and pop music. Some of my music is upbeat and full of layers and frills, while others are quite stripped back and intimate. I feel like you can definitely hear some of my influences in my music – I love Etta James, Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, H.E.R, Lauryn Hill, Amy Winehouse, Elton John…. (among many others!)

Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?

Kinkora: I actually haven’t had the opportunity to perform anything from this new project due to COVID-19! Time will tell!

Review Fix: What inspired your latest single?

Kinkora: Set Me Free is about feeling trapped and unable to find a way out. The release has coincided with the general feeling that we all have of feeling a little bit confined at the moment so I’m hoping people can relate to the song in some way!

Review Fix: What are your goals for the rest of 2020?

Kinkora: To keep releasing music and to up-skill myself in the release strategy department!

Review Fix: What’s next?

Kinkora: I’m planning to release a series of singles through 2020 and into 2021! I’m looking forward to finally getting a heap of music out there that I’ve been working on!
