Review Fix Exclusive: Kinkora Talks ‘You Got Me’ And More

Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Kinkora, who talks about her new single, “You Got Me.”

Review Fix: What inspired this track?

Kinkora: I wrote this track from a place of gratitude. I have had anxiety for a really long time and at times it has really got in the way of my being able to do certain things. During these times, the people around me have been so amazingly supportive, kind and understanding. In particular, my partner has been with me through it all – and this song is an acknowledgement of that. The song mostly came together in a stream of consciousness and I went back and adjusted a few lyrics after the whole thing had taken shape.

Review Fix: How is it different from your other work?

Kinkora: You Got Me is the second song I’ve released and comparatively to my first track, it’s extremely delicate and raw. The instrumentation is super sparse leaving room for the lyrics and melody to drive the song. It sits more in the modern R&B side of things, where some of my other tracks tend more towards traditional soul music.

Review Fix: What are your goals for it?

Kinkora: This is a tough question! I’m just happy that the track is out in the world! I’m a completely independent musician and am just starting to release music under this project so any kind of response is pretty exciting for me! So far, leading Australian radio station Triple J premiered the track, it was added to a couple of editorial Spotify playlists and the music video is going to be played on MTV in Australia…. so I kind of feel like I’ve surpassed all of my expectations for this track already in 2 days haha!

Review Fix: How would you like it to be remembered?

Kinkora: As a song that reminded people to tap into their gratitude and also one that people can connect to if they are going through a hard time.

Review Fix: How has it changed you as a musician?

Kinkora: A few ways! I recorded the vocals with an amazing musician Rob Upward who really helped me connect with what I was trying to say and encouraged me to get more and more delicate while recording my vocals. I think that this really helped bring the song to life and capture raw and honest emotions – it’s a skill that I have used in all my recordings since then. I’ve also learned a lot through this release process – again, as a DIY musician, there is always so much to learn and with every release I think I’m getting better at knowing what to do!

Review Fix: What’s next?

Kinkora: I’ve got heaps more songs recorded and a number of videos finished – I’m just working out my release schedule!! I’ve been working on this new music for a really long time so I’m really excited to get it all out into the world.
