Cyberpunk 2077 Volume 1: Trauma Team Review: Great to Look At

One of the most hyped games of 2020 is CD Projeckt’s “Cyberpunk 2077.” Even before the game is released there have been plenty of merchandise and spinoffs. One of them is a comic called “Trauma Team” written by Cullen Bunn with artist Miguel Valderrama and it shows that it’s a spinoff.

Nadia is an assistant EMT for “Trauma Team International” is given a second chance at an assignment after her entire team was killed on her previous assignment. However, the person who murdered her entire team is the client her new team was sent to rescue from the top of a 100 story building that is crawling with gang members. The comic is a quick read since it’s just nonstop action with little plot. That may be to some people’s liking but if you’re looking for anything more complicated than “guns blazing and people die” look elsewhere.

On top of that, Nadia is a terrible character. Every bad thing that happens with her new team is due to her not doing things quick enough or second guessing things. It’s worse that she really doesn’t care what happens to her teammates or even herself.  In fact, her character is barely a character to begin with.

While the comic tries to create something resembling a reason for why she’s not following orders it comes off as weak and Nadia an unlikable character to the point where you don’t care what happens to her. The artwork is best thing about the comic. It looks like a classic sci-fi comic with the uniform the team wears, the client having cybernetic arms is awesome and the general look of the comic brings you back to the heyday of sci-fi comics. The colors use give off that classic 80s “Heavy Metal Magazine” vibe which for some old comic book readers feels amazing.

“Trauma Team” has a basic story with a terrible lead and great art. Some readers may enjoy the fact that it is just mindless action and even forgive the poorly written lead, but others will only love the art and hate the story.
