Review Fix Exclusive: Last Snow’s Kay Trust Talks ‘Right Now’ And More

Review Fix chats with Last Snow’s Kay Trust, who discusses his origin in music, as well as his creative process and the band’s new single, “Right Now.”

Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?

Kay Trust: All three of us started playing music at a young age. Kay Trust played violin as a child, and started trying to form rock bands by the end of highschool. David Jay’s father played guitar in bands. As a result, David picked up a guitar early and began playing. Tony also started his musical journey fairly young and has made a wild journey through several bands! So we all had the rock band dream in highschool I suppose.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Trust: Our creative process is varied. Many of our songs were written by individual band members, and I would say the most common process has involved developing music followed by writing lyrics. There have been a few exceptions where lyrics came first though. There are also a few songs that we all wrote together as a band. In the end, I think we just try to let inspiration hit us in whatever way it chooses. We let that lead us through the creation of the song.

Review Fix: What inspires you?

Trust: Well, there is no short answer. Of course we are inspired by countless musicians who have come before us! Specifically though, I think many of our songs are inspired by emotion and feeling. The human condition and love, hate, betrayal, sadness, and failure have all led to inspiration in our music. In a few cases we have also been inspired by other non-musical works such as Star Wars, and Dracula though. So we don’t necessarily limit ourselves. The universe is an immense place from which to draw inspiration!

Review Fix: What does music mean to you?

Trust: Music means everything. It is comfort. It is an outlet for emotions. It is motivation to accomplish or overcome. It is expression and it is therapeutic. Music can be anything and everything really.

Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?

Trust: A friend put it best when he described us as raw melodic hard rock with front and center bass playing. We draw musical inspiration from so many places that I don’t think it’s possible to make a direct comparison to just one other band. We play what we feel and what we like I suppose.

Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?

Trust: I would say they are fairly similar. We have made a point of keeping our recordings raw. People have commented that our recording has the feel of a live album. That’s what we wanted. We want it to feel like real rock n roll, not Top 40. I suppose the one difference would be that there is regularly a second guitar part on our studio albums. However, we are a three piece band so there is no rhythm guitar under the guitar solos when we perform live!

Review Fix: What inspired your latest single?

Trust: Our song “Right Now” was actually inspired by Dracula. The chorus was built around the moment in the film where Bela Legosi says, â€œListen to them, the children of the night. What music they make!”

Review Fix: What are your goals for 2021?

Trust: I think our goals are similar to most bands at this point. We want to get out and play again. The shutdowns have been really hard on a lot of people both financially and emotionally. Our goal is simply to get out there and play some rock and roll again!  It’s been too long!

Review Fix:  What’s next?

Trust: Hopefully, we will keep playing music and even have some fresh new material recorded in the future! We definitely have some songs brewing and forming in the mists around us!

Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?

Trust: Yes! Don’t let rock n roll die!! When things open back up around you, go see your local bands!!! There is so much amazing music out there and not all of it is on the radio!
