Review Fix chats with Arcadian Haze’s John Rose, who discusses the band’s origin and goals for 2021.
Review Fix: How did the project start?
John Rose: I had the fortune to get to know both Tye and Nath at work. Tye suggested we had a jam with his old band, it was pretty much game on from then. So at that early stage it was me, Tye and Jamie, with Bartley on drums. After a few months jamming, Nath came down and that changed the dynamic a little bit which was good. Eventually Bartley packed it in and, after that, Gilby came in on drums and it’s all been spiralling out of control from there haha…
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Rose: Anything goes, we all come from different musical backgrounds so there’s a big crossover of influences. We usually try to capture what comes out naturally, either in our own time and space or collectively. It’s generally a natural democracy when it comes to what’s what. Nobody gets molly-coddled and we’re all straight talking men so if it’s not working we’ll say so and then you have to take it on the chin. No throwing teddies out of the cot or any of that puerile, egotistical nonsense.
Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?
Rose: Nath once played me a Jay-Z tune I can’t remember which, about a week later, trying to remember the guitar riff, I got it totally wrong but Love on the Dole riff came out of it. That was the initial seed and then we worked it as a band over a matter of weeks or months, we let the idea live for a bit first and didn’t force it. I like the organic approach we’ve got, we might not be the most prolific, but it’s quality not quantity.
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2021?
Rose: Another EP at the very least. We’ve already got the idea of the concept we want to do, which is quite exciting, if we can pull it off. It will be three tracks again which are already written and ready to go. Surely we’ll be able to play live again soon? To be honest I’d be happy to just be able to go to the pub for a few light ales.
Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?
Rose: If they like it, good! As long as its positive, I’m happy. I want it to make them dance, think, laugh, cry and make babies to… I don’t know, I’m not into controlling how people should feel, but I think if we enjoy what we’re doing there’s a decent chance others will too.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Rose: Keeping it real. In these times of increasing polarisation, entitlement and intolerance we want to bring people together. We just want to keep churning out the tunes and growing our fan base doing gigs and festivals again, getting out and about making a nuisance of ourselves.
