Review Fix Exclusive: Srichumporn Kongwisawamit Talks Touhou Multi Scroll Shooting 2

Review Fix chats with Touhou Multi Scroll Shooting 2 developer Srichumporn Kongwisawamit, who discusses the game’s development cycle and more

Review Fix: How was this game born?

Srichumporn Kongwisawamit: I am passionate about several Touhou games. ZUN made Touhou as he wanted. Touhou fans made fan games by their own passion. I have an idea to make a Touhou fan game which has references from other fan games. Touhou Multi Scroll Shooting is a derivative work of derivative works.

Some bullet patterns look good from the side view. Some bullet patterns look good from the top view. I played Astebreed before. That game changes camera view during stages. It is a nice idea to provide multiple camera views to players. Shoot’em up games are not too hard to program. They do not have too complicated logic like mmo rpg games.

Review Fix: What is your role in the game?

Kongwisawamit: I make 3d models, textures, animation and game play. All game play mechanics are made from blueprint visual scripting in Unreal Engine 4. I use sound effects from free sources. I edited some of them in audacity to fit in my game.  Music is made by Umbra, supported by Gizmo, the dragon.

Review Fix: What has development been like?

Kongwisawamit:  A lot of trial and error.

Review Fix: What makes this game special?

Kongwisawamit: Seamless dynamic camera behaviour. Bullet patterns were designed to look good in the  current camera view in game.

Review Fix: What games influenced this one the most?

Kongwisawamit: “Astebreed” for dynamic camera. “Phantasm Romance -幻想浪漫紀行-” for game vibe.

Review Fix: Any fun stories or wild moments during development?

Kongwisawamit: There are many troubles during development. I do not feel fun specially.

Review Fix: What were the major lessons learned?

Kongwisawamit: Sales volume of my previous game is not good. I learned I should promote games more. 0.99$ is not a good price. If I released it as a free to play game, I should get more followers. To avoid critical bugs from being unable to load the save slot. I had to force the game to create a save slot from beginning.

Review Fix: Do you think preserving older gameplay mechanics in new games is important?

Kongwisawamit: For action games, it is important. Players can get used to them easily.

Review Fix: The marketplace is crowded. How do you think you stand out?

Kongwisawamit: I am not sure I can survive or not.

Review Fix: How have your previous experiences in industry helped this game?

Kongwisawamit: I learned how to use Unreal Development Kit (Free version of Unreal Engine 3) when I worked for the previous team. Workflow of Unreal Engine 4 is similar to Unreal Engine 3.

Review Fix: How do you want this game to ultimately be remembered?

Kongwisawamit: I made this game with great ambition. It is passionate about Touhou fandom communities.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Kongwisawamit:  I have a plan to make non-Touhou shooting games.
