Review Fix Exclusive: Edgar Camacho Talks ‘Onion Skin’ And More

By Patrick Hickey Jr.

Review Fix chats with “Onion Skin” creator Edgar Camacho, who discusses his comic and his hopes for it.

Review Fix: How did you know a career in comics was for you?

Edgar Camacho: Since I was little I liked to draw a lot and watched a lot of cartoons. Later, I learned that many of those cartoons were based on comics and they interested me more. I think I express myself better by drawing and doing comics, which is why I chose it as my profession.

Review Fix: Who inspires you creatively?

Camacho: I create a lot of my stories based on lived experiences. Not so much as an autobiography, but as the starting point to tell a story.

Review Fix: What inspired this comic?

Camacho: I was at a point in my life that I wanted to make comics professionally, and I didn’t know how to take that step. I’m a graphic designer and I wanted to quit my job and dedicate myself to comics. It is a way of saying that you have to take the first step.

Review Fix: How is it different or special?

Camacho: Because of the theme and the narrative, I don’t think it’s the typical comic. It is a story about knowing yourself with the help of others and through your strengths and your failures. And in Mexico, it was the first comic that was included as part of the literature awards – in the Tierra Adentro awards side by side with novels, poetry and short stories.

Review Fix: Who do you think will dig it the most?

Camacho: In my experience at book presentations, many young adults identified with Rolando’s search….That age where you’re not entirely happy with the person you’re becoming. But, I think it also works for all audiences who love adventures, mores specifically, a crazy  adventure in the desert.

Review Fix: How do you want it to be remembered?

Camacho: As a good comic. As a story that you want to share with everyone.

Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?

Camacho: I hope you really like this comic and want to see more of my work.

Review Fix: What’s next?

I just published “Acacia 22” in France and it is getting a good reception. Now I am part of the Webtoon Latin America family as the creator of an original series.  I hope you can read it soon!

Review Fix: Where can people find out more?

Camacho: You can find me on my website – edgardcamachoart.com – and on my social networks @TirassinSentido, where I post what I am currently working on. And for English readers, I have content like “Metal Life” (a comic about a metalhead) and “Summon’s Alley”. Check them out!
