Hellboy and the B.P.R.D: The Secret of Chesbro House #1 Review: So Worth It

Hellboy is called yet to another mission, this time it’s a haunted mansion in the part issue “Hellboy and the B.P.R.D: The Secret of Chesbro House” written by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden with artist Shawn McManus.

Hellboy heads to New Paltz, New York to investigate amansion that is haunted by Sarah Chesbro, Peter Chesbro’s daughter who is rumored to have locked her away in the mansion somewhere after she experienced something she shouldn’t have. Now Hellboy, a medium and Peter Chesbro’s great-great-grandson (who only wants the ghost gone so he can sell the mansion) have to get rid of the ghost.

The plot isn’t all that original, but the twist that introduces the second issue does liven up the story. On top of that, it’s rare to see a descendant of someone who is inheriting a mansion only cares about selling it. It seems a bit more realistic in that usually people who inherit mansions only want to sell them. The comic also does create some mysteries surrounding what happened during that certain event and if the comic’s ending is any indication, it’ll be something crazy. McManus’s art is truly something amazing. This is one of the most polished
Hellboy” comics out there.

The character designs are truly amazing. The backgrounds are also something to behold. A lot of detail was put into each panel so that this mansion looks like what a real mansion would look like. This art is helped with the amazing colors by Dave Stewart. If you want prime examples of what shading is supposed to look like, this comic has a few.

“Hellboy and the B.P.R.D: The Secret of Chesbro House” has an interesting story that may come off as generic but the twist is what makes it worth reading. The art also lends to the quality of the comic which any “Hellboy” fan will appreciate.
