Review Fix Exclusive: Edward Davis Talks Immortal Era And More

Review Fix chats with Immortal Era creator Edward Davis, who discusses everything about the series and his goals for it moving forward.

Review Fix: How did you know a career in comics was for you?

Edward Davis: For me it was always something I dreamed of doing. I have been an avid comic reader since I was old enough to read, and always dreamed of seeing a book with my name on it. Unfortunately, I always thought I had to have artistic skill to make a comic book. It wasn’t until I was much older that I realized that the writer of the book was not the artist. Still, I had no idea that a creator could publish their own material. It wasn’t until I saw Kevin Smith speaking at Hall H in San Diego that I realized that creators have the power to control their own destiny. It was at that point that I decided that I needed to finally get this story out of my head and into the world.

Review Fix: Who inspires you creatively?

Davis: I am a huge music fan, and my biggest inspirations have always been the independent musicians who have followed the DIY approach and released their music with no help from the outside world. My favorite authors are Neil Gaiman and Garth Ennis. Sandman and Preacher were gamechangers for me when I read them in High school. They showed me that a comic could be told with equal or greater depth than a novel.

Review Fix: What inspired Immortal Era?

Immortal Era was originally inspired by a chapter in Gulliver’s Travels that I read when I was in college. While Gulliver is traveling, he encounters an island where everyone is immortal. At first, he believes he has found a perfect place. However, he soon realizes that immortality is terrible as people continue to age and eventually lose their mobility and mental capacity. I loved this idea, and immediately after reading, it, I started thinking of ways to take the idea and merge it with my love of horror and fantasy.

Review Fix: What kind of characters do you enjoy creating the most?

I love creating heroes with big character changing arcs. However, it is really fun creating villains. They are definitely the most fun to write.

Review Fix: How are your comics different or special?

I believe that my story is special because it is telling a big story that will require 20-30 issues to complete. I love big, grand scale stories, that don’t just have a villain of the month feel. Immortal Era definitely falls into this category. I am taking my time with the storytelling and hopefully readers will enjoy this approach.

Review Fix: What about this comic? Sell us. Sell us hard.

Immortal Era tells the story of a post apocalyptic world set 200 years in the future where humans can no longer die. It centers on a group of outcasts who are on a mission to save humanity by killing them. It’s a dark bloody fantasy epic that will, hopefully, leave readers breathless, and hungry for more at the conclusion of each issue.

Review Fix: Who do you think will dig it the most?

It is definitely written for an adult audience. I think fans of horror and fantasy will enjoy it.

Review Fix: How do you want your books to be remembered?

I hope that people remember this as a fun series where they were left guessing the whole way through.

Review Fix: What are your long-term goals for your work?

My biggest goal is to simply tell the story to its conclusion. I would, of course, love to see it developed into a television or movie project, who wouldn’t? However, if I am able to accomplish nothing more than telling my story to its conclusion, I will be completely satisfied.

Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?

Thanks so much for having me. I truly appreciate it.

Review Fix: What’s next?

I will continue to release new issues of Immortal Era. I am also working on a new title called Corruptor that will be released sometime next year.
