Review Fix Exclusive: Davis And the Love’s Nate Davis Talks Goals And More

Review Fix chats with Davis and the Love’s Nate Davis, who discusses the band’s origin’s creative process and so much more.

Review Fix: How did the project start?

Nate Davis: It started when I was looking for a particular sound. I really wanted to merge old school soul with new school beats, and put my own flavor on it. My buddy, Jordan Hawley in Indianapolis sent me some tracks that he was working on, and it really locked in with where I wanted to go with the music. From there, I just had this concept of Davis & The Love, because it started out as just me (Nate Davis) and the love of music and sort of the energy that I wanted to put out into the world. I was hoping that I would find musicians who had the same goals, and we put an add out on Craigslist (which could’ve been a real disaster, but ended up working out), and found Nelson who is our keyboard player. I already knew that I wanted Dre on drums, and a booking agent friend of mine suggested Cory on guitar and it really started to click. I also had collaborations with guys that I really respected musically, who all added some flavor to the project. Jay Jones, Benito DiBartoli, Ken Martin, Troi Buchanon, Ryan Russell, Luis Madrid, Al Leach, and Nick Gerlach all added something to the sound. It was a real collaborative effort and continues to be.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Davis: Normally someone comes with an idea and we just build around it. Jordan Hawley is a friend of mine and producer and honorary member of the band. He normally has a great foundation. And then between Nelson (keys),Cory (guitar), and Dre (drums) we can kind of build the music around that. And then based on the mood of the music or the mood I’m in that day, I’ll start writing to it or freestyling, or singing a hook idea to see what comes naturally with the vibe.

Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?

Davis: I would say that our song, “Hot Damn” which is coming out November 12th is a standout that I’m really looking forward to releasing. I was really getting into the Sergio Leone Spaghetti Westerns, and my producer just happened to send me some music that really had an outlaw vibe. So, I just sort of put myself in the shoes of Clint Eastwood coming through town and really love the story of the song. Our latest single “Change the World” (out now and aviailable everywhere!) I think is also a standout because I think it’s a message of hope and unity in an increasingly divided world. Both mean a lot to me and I’m glad we get to share them with the world.

Review Fix: What are your goals for 2021?

Davis: The goals are to keep writing songs that resonate with people and that we’re passionate about. We also want to keep playing live shows and touring as much as possible. The goals are just to keep going and spread our music all over the world.

Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?

Davis: I want people to feel something. I want it to create an emotion. I want to tell a story that they can relate to, or help inspire them or be there for them in a time of need. I don’t want it to be mindless music. I want it to matter and something that people can listen to for a long time.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Davis: More music, more touring, more Davis & The Love! Stay tuned…
