Review Fix Exclusive: King Fabbs Talks Goals, Origin in Music And More

Review Fix chats with King Fabbs, who details his origin in music, signature style and standout work.

Review Fix: How did the project start?

Fabbs: After looking to be in a band for a lot of years I decided that pursuing a solo career was a much better option for me. I started this whole thing in early 2020. I’ve wanted to make my own music for a very long time now and I felt that I was ready to really give it a go. I got into the habit of writing music and lyrics each day and then I started writing my EP in the spring time.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Fabbs: I always make sure to find a way to remember an idea as soon as it comes to me no matter where I am or what I’m doing. Usually I’ll make a voice memo on my phone as soon as I get an idea. I really make sure not to force any thoughts or ideas out of myself. I really take my time building most of my songs too, even if it takes months. I also like to do some writing exercises because it helps fuel my inspiration and I feel I get a lot of ideas when I do those exercises. Trying to keep a clear headspace also helps me write. I find it kinda hard to write if I’m feeling stressed out or I have something on my mind, it just makes it hard for me to focus. But sometimes those moods turn into really good song ideas!

Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?

Fabbs: I think my standout song would have to be “No Stopping Tonight.” It’s had such a great response, I’ve had a ton of people tell me how much they love it! Out of the five songs that I wrote my EP, “No Stopping Tonight” was the one song I was actually a little bit unsure about going into the recording session. I was feeling it either needed something more or maybe I should have saved it and released it sometime in the future. But after the song was mixed and mastered those feelings went away. I loved how the song turned out, I wouldn’t change anything about it! I wrote it all in my bed room over the course of a few days. I had originally wrote it in a completely different key and I believe I had written 8 different versions of the main guitar riff because I just couldn’t settle on something haha. I certainly love how the whole song turned out though, and it is so much fun to play live as well!

Review Fix: What are your goals for the rest of 2021?

Fabbs: For what’s left of this year, my goals are to release a single and hopefully release my first music video! Also just making plans to really start creating more content and grow my fan base!

Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?

Fabbs: I want to have a positive affect on people, I want people to feel great when they are listening to my music. I hope that people can connect with words and find their own meaning within each song. But I also want people to have fun when they hear my music! Turn it up when you’re driving or when you’re at the gym or if you simply just need to rock out! I also really love that I can represent people of colour within this genre of music. I used to get picked on for listening to rock music and wanting to be in a band and I never spoke about how that actually made me feel. I hope I can inspire and represent those who might be afraid to show parts of their personality or who they really are. I think it’s ridiculous when people make you feel bad just for loving something. You should never feel afraid or ashamed for loving a certain type of music, or wanting to look a certain way, or having a certain colour of skin. Being you is the best thing you can be!

Review Fix: What’s next?

Fabbs: I have a single that I’m going to be making an announcement about soon! Planning out a music video, or a couple of music videos. I want to play more live shows, so I’m looking out for some gigs!
