A Whale of a Time

humpback_whaleBoston may not be the biggest city in the United States, but miles off the harbor, some of the biggest mammals on the planet swim free and proud.

And for a few hours, you can hang out with them and experience their wonders.

All without breaking your bank.

The Boston Harbor Cruises Whale Watch gives you the opportunity to see these powerful, yet majestic and beautiful creatures and- for only 40 dollars. A four-hour trip that begins at Long Wharf and ends near the tip of Cape Cod, this endeavor is a lengthy one that is visually stunning and thought-provoking.

Bring your camera, you’ll need it.

Before seeing any whales, you’ll have to sail out to the open ocean, and that process alone will be worth the trip for many tourists. Seeing the Boston skyline shrink as you head out into the ocean is a fun and mystifying experience and one that puts life into perspective. In the midst of all the technology that has engulfed our lives, there’s still a place where the natural order of the world has barely been disturbed and where these creatures can roam.

Turn your cell phone off and enjoy it.

Once whales are spotted, the boat will try to get as close as possible, while trained personnel, will talk about them, giving you a plethora of information that makes the trip as educational as it is enjoyable. However, in spite of all the data and fun facts thrown your way, the lesson does get a tad preachy at times and you may need to turn your I-Pod on to cancel it out. Luckily, you’ll be way too busy watching the whales to care about anything anyone else around you is saying.

Undeniably gorgeous and breathtaking, the fact that you are able to be so close to the action makes the trip a once in a lifetime endeavor.

While it’s obvious that these are huge creatures, seeing them with your own eyes is a completely different story. The scale of how large these animals are is something that you must experience for yourself. If you’re lucky, you might even see your new ocean friends do more than just swim, possibly even wave a flipper, or possibly jump through the air, as they are just as curious to see you as well. You might even be able to check out a young calf getting a morning snack from his mother in a scene that is sure to stick with you way longer than your stay in Boston.

For 40 dollars, it’s hard to find anything that takes a whole morning to do and is as fun, inspiring and cool as whale watching in Boston. The pictures are emotions you take and feel during the trip alone will justify the price and for a short time, you’ll forget about all the little things that make life so much of a chore at times.

That my friends, is priceless.
