Welcome Back Norm

Mocking the Barry Bonds trial, Tiger Woods, this week’s masters tournament and even a sad Bill Cosby in its first episode, Comedy Central’s newest show starring Norm MacDonald delivers.

It’s not ridiculous.

We promise.

MacDonald’s unique style of comedy [even from his days from Saturday Night Live] has always been smile-inducing. His sense of humor always makes you pause and think before you get the punch line, but the way he delivers his jokes is what makes his style of comedy special and fun to watch.

This latest new sports comedy is reminiscent to MacDonald’s weekend update from SNL, the only difference is that he’s poking fun at recent sports news, along with the recent sports commercials that have athletes in it. One commercial that MacDonald exposes is Michael Jordan’s Hanes underwear commercial where Jordan has a Hitler moustache. The way Macdonald delivers the monologue with that smile he has on his face makes you laugh even harder because he is so good at the presentation of the piece.

Another clip that will have you laughing hysterically is the boy getting hit by an ice cream truck in the middle of the street. The way MacDonald sets this clip up is that he shows clips from other sports events such as pro athletes dancing at basketball games, or people in the crowd who are at the games, and lets the audience guess whom the ice cream truck hits. The way MacDonald presents this clip is
genius because he does it with such ease.

However, the best part of the episode is when MacDonald goes undercover as Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers, while trying to play a trick on his teammate during practice. It is obvious that there is camera trickery going on because Blake’s voice is dubbed over by MacDonald’s and after shooting hook shots and jump shots that landed nowhere near the basket, and the basketball getting caught in between the rim and the back board, MacDonald [as Griffin] gets a broom to try and get the ball down. After a few minutes, the “real” Griffin walks in the door while MacDonald tries to storm out. That clip alone was the highlight of the show due to MacDonald’s funny voice-over work, and an even better job by Blake Griffin, pretending to be a horrible ball player.

Overall, “Sports Show with Norm MacDonald” is solid. It’s no “Chapelle Show,” but it may be close enough to stick around for a while. Only MacDonald can put a sly smile on your face. Not taking him seriously while he delivers the latest sports news is what makes Comedy Centrals newest sports comedy show that much funnier.

At the site, I'm a music, television and graphic novel kind of guy and that's what I'll be writing for the most part. Expect some book and music reviews as well though [insert demon horns here]. I grew up in Bensonhurst Brooklyn, the same neighborhood many of the best mafia films of our day were based on, idolizing guys like Robert Deniro, Martin Scorsese and Al Pacino. I'm also a big sports fan and follow the New York Yankees immensely.
