ESQUILLE Rock This Club Down EP Review: Electronica for the Electronica Die-Hard

Swedish DJ ESQUILLE proves he’s still got it in his recently released “Rock This Club Down” EP, an effort that comes after a lengthy break from music.

Like a time machine, ESQUILLE’s five-track EP will take you to the days when dance music mattered. Obviously influenced by signature dance grooves of the ‘90s, this EP will have you searching for the techno songs of your youth. But with infectious and catchy beats, ESQUILLE proves he can start a party as well. Just under 20 minutes in length, the EP absolutely flies by and works well on repeat.

Although all five tracks have some type of dancability, there are a couple of easy standouts. “Don’t Stop the Rhythm” belongs in a dance video game. It almost begs to be danced to. From the uber-fast keyboard and catchy vocals and other audio bells and whistles, it has the makings of a club-hit. The same thing goes for “Music Electronica” which would work perfectly in a racing game the likes of “Gran Turismo” or “Ridge Racer,” as the wavy pace and smooth bass make it perfect for driving.

In spite of his charisma and prowess, in order to truly appreciate Esquille, dance music has to run on your veins. Otherwise, the repetitive vocals and beat mixing will fall upon deaf ears. He’s not going to captivate you if you think Electronica is a type of TV or if you believe Will.i.am’s name is spelled incorrectly. While the production quality is sound and the time and energy on each track is obvious, it’s only something that real aficionados of the genre will truly appreciate.

Had there been more diverse vocal work, “Rock This Club Down” would have had more cross-genre appeal, but don’t let that take anything away from his effort. For pure enthusiasts, the EP is a solid offering that’ll get stuck in your head in no time.
