Review Fix Exclusive: Chris Burney Talks Bowling For Soup’s ‘Songs That People Actually Liked Volume 1’

Review Fix chats with Bowling For Soup guitarist Chris Burney who breaks down the band’s newest collection, “Songs That People Actually Liked Volume 1,” which features newly re-recorded fan favorite songs from their first 10 years (1994-2003). Tracks like “Emily,” “Punk Rock 101” and “Dance With You” among other greats. The album also feature a brand new song called “20 Years (That’s A Lot Of Beers).”

Review Fix: Did you ever think the band would make 20 years?

Chris Burney: That’s not really anything we really thought about in the beginning. Our goals were to just get together and make some music and play some shows here and there. Still doing that to this day.

Review Fix: How does it feel to revisit all of these songs again?

Burney: Quite nostalgic. It was really cool seeing these older songs come back to life. Some of those songs have been played in 15+ years. Had to do a bit of re-learning on some of them.

Review Fix: What makes them different this time around?

Burney: The production is a million times better. Technology is a great thing. Also, some things that were missing got added. When you play a song live for a while, you tend to add and change things a bit. Same songs, just a few different little nuances.

Review Fix: How is this album different from other greatest hits albums?

Burney: Well, this is not really an record full of old hits. It’s a compilation of songs that we liked as well as the fans liked. They are also reproductions, not remixes. Rebuilt from the ground up.

Review Fix:What song on this album do you think has the best story behind it? Can you share it?

Burney: The song “13” was the first song we wrote as a band. First rehearsal. Came together fast and easy to be honest. Here’s a riff, here’s a chorus, here’s some vocals… We have our first song!

Review Fix: How do you want this album to be remembered?

Burney: As a testament about 4 fellas who have always enjoyed what they’ve done and have stood the rest of time.

Review Fix: What do you think the next 20 years has in store for Bowling for Soup?Did you ever think the band would make 20 years?

Burney: Hopefully more songs about funny stuff. More shows, more beers, and more good times.
