Fallout 4 Review: Welcome to Apocalyptic Paradise

“Fallout 4” is everything a gamer would expect from both the Fallout Series and open world games in 2015.

The game features a vast post-apocalyptic Bostonian wasteland for gamers to explore and make their own. The game has over 25 locations that you can make into settlements and build up any way you want, provided you have the time and necessary resources to do so. As you explore the wasteland, you will find over 300 locations scattered across the map and each one of them contains the resources you will need to build up the settlements. However, if you don’t wish to build up the settlements at all, you don’t have to either. You can simply leave the settlement just the way you found it and concentrate on the main story and other side quests you unlock. The main story, without going into major spoilers, is simply a tale of a father/mother looking for their kidnapped son. In “Fallout 4,” you can choose your gender and appearance at the start of the game. A recurring theme throughout the game is player choice. You can choose to stay in one location as long as you wish or you can choose to go to as many locations as possible. There are endless possibilities when playing Fallout 4.

The game features many famous Boston locales such as Fenway Park (appropriately dubbed Diamond City in the game) and Salem. This gives a sense of familiarity to anyone who has lived or been to Massachusetts. Of course, the beauty of the game comes in Bethesda Game Studios own take on each location. For instance, Diamond City is one of the first towns the player will visit and shows what Fenway Park would look like in a post-apocalypse. Besides memorable locations, there are also many memorable characters and companions that the player can also find and have tag along in their journey. These include a dog, a Minute Man, a super mutant, a synth and a reporter. Each of which has their own backstory and motives on why they wish to help you. But then again the player is in control of which companion they want to bring along on the journey and which they would just rather shoot in the head.

Speaking of shooting, one should mention that Fallout 4 also has an endless amount of weapons and modifications that can be made to each weapon as you level up your character. Although there are some special weapons that are found throughout the game world that cannot be modified, rest assured these weapons are super fun to use anyway because they are already powerful. Legendary versions of each enemy also drop special weapons and armor for the player once they are killed. This includes ghouls, raiders, super mutants and every other enemy type you come across over the 300 locations in the game.

Overall, it is easy to recommend this game to anyone that enjoys shooters, role playing games, exploration, looting, action, customization and the city of Boston. You will find something to sink your teeth into and pour dozens upon dozens of hours into. Fallout 4 is in no way a perfect game, as the launch version of the game did contain some bugs and glitches in it. These, however, aren’t game breaking and are more of a small nuisance than anything else. There are also some quests that will repeat but they are entirely optional and serve as a way of farming bottle caps (the game’s currency). These missions may also be used to find new supplies needed for building settlements and modifying weapons. With that, go Forth and explore Vault Dwellers.

+ Lasting appeal, will keep players occupied for many hours and multiple ways to play
