Review Fix Exclusive: Rhett May Talks Creative Process And More

Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Rhett May, who discusses his goals for 2016 and creative process. A multi-talented musician and writer, May has no shortage of confidence.

Review Fix: How were you interested in music?

Rhett May: I’ve been interested in music ever since I was 8 years old.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

May: My creative process is simply to put myself in a position of emotion – just as an actor immerses himself/herself in a role for a movie. If I want to write a love song, I simply imagine myself in love with the most beautiful person on this planet. I also read constantly; newspapers, magazines, comics, watching movies, televisions shows, just picking up words/phrases/slogans etc. I then break them down into emotions and feelings and look at them from every human perspective – every angle. I’m generally a storyteller – a character in a novel or movie.

Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?

May: My standout song is so very hard to choose. I have a number of varying genres that I write in, depending on the theme.

I’m recording two ten song albums at the moment, with two separate producers and they both have very different styles that I like. Some of the songs I’ve written have been around my creative head for three or four years now.

Review Fix: What are your goals for 2016?

May: By the end of May 2016, I would have over 25 songs recorded and mastered, and the problem I then have is what to do with them. I need to find someone who can believe in me and take my music out to the global market – but who?

Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?

May: I write about everyday life: emotions, feelings, social disorder and dysfunction. I’m a crusader against addictive and deadly drugs. I also write and sing about love and life and the beautiful.

I’m a romantic and I’m in love with the positive aspects of mankind.

Review Fix: What’s next?

May: I’m a prolific creator of killer songs. I probably have another 70 or 80 unrecorded. I’m drowning in a tidal wave of creativity and don’t have enough hours to get everything down/recorded. If there is anyone out there who feels they’d like to tap into my music and take it global…..I’m ready.
