Review Fix Exclusive: Tyler Colt Talks ‘Take Me Home Tonight’ And More

Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Tyler Colt, who discusses his Eddie Money remix, as well as his goals for the future.

About Tyler Colt:

Tyler Colt is a young Rock Pop singer/songwriter with a musical background in guitar, bass, and drums. This multi-faceted experience, all before finishing high school, brings a unique view to his music. While he has acted in movies, TV, commercials, and music videos, his passion is music.

Tyler was five when he began taking guitar lessons from various teachers until he began teaching himself. Once he met Monty Pittman, guitarist for Madonna and Ministry. Pittman reignited Tyler’s passion for guitar through The School of Rock South Bay.

While he enjoys all genres of music, Tyler’s passion is rock. His influences include Slash, Jimi Hendrix, and Dave Grohl. “[Grohl] seems to be a really positive guy. He’s been through so much watching his friend and band mate Kurt Cobain pass away and still, he’s got a great outlook on life. [These] life experiences [have shaped] some fantastic songs [with] the Foo Fighters. I hope to meet him one day… He’s proven you can do anything you put your mind to.”

Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?

Tyler Colt: I started taking guitar lessons when I was 5. I always loved music, ever since I can remember. As the years went on, I got better at playing guitar and really started getting into singing & playing. Mostly messing around in front of family & friends. Then I had an opportunity to be in a boy band, but I wasn’t into it, I was only 14.  Then at 15, I met Monte Pittman, guitarist to Madonna and the band Ministry. He really inspired me.  I came out with my first single in June 2015, had a single release party at Whisky-aGoGo and my family friend Robbie Crane from Ratt & Black Star Riders was my bass player. We rocked the house and I was hooked. From that moment on I wanted to keep that feeling going. It was incredible.

Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?

Colt: I’d say it’s Rock/Alternative Sound. I like Green Day, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighter’s and a few other bands and these tend to influence me and my sound of music making. I grew up with rock music because of my parents. Even upon entering the world my Dad recalls jamming to Van Halen while Mom was in labor with me. LOL

Review Fix: Why Eddie Money?

Colt: Because Eddie Money had some great tunes and has kind of been forgotten, until recently. It’s funny cause I liked his song “Take Me Home Tonight” and started working on the tracks in the studio. A few months went by and I heard he was performing at Lucky Strike in Hollywood. I was blown away he was back out there performing. I wish I had the time to go see his concert when he was in California. That’d be pretty cool. His music was genuine rock n roll music. There was no gimmicks, just good lyrics, and a great sound. I wanted to remix that song because I thought it was classic and really liked it.

Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?

Colt: I’d like my music to stay with people and move them, in a positive or good way. Nowadays, there’s so much hate and horrific happenings in the world on the daily, it’s like you can’t escape. I want my music to be fun, to be able to forget about the BS of the moment and be happy & have fun.  The way life should be.

Review Fix: You’ve shared the stage with some awesome musicians. Would have you learned the most from?

Colt: I’ve met & jammed with so many really awesome people, they all seem so humble even with all their fame. They’ve all taught me a few tricks when it comes to the guitar, but mostly they’ve been so genuinely nice & supportive. Robbie Crane has told me he’d introduce me to managers & influential people if I want. He’s told me to always be true to myself, does want I want, not what people want me to be or do. It’s easy to get excited and sign a contract not keeping in mind what music you’re all about. Monte Pittman, another really cool guy & so darn nice. He’s really helped me with my guitar skills. I’m really Blessed to have met & been able to call most of them friends.

Review Fix: What are your goals in music?

Colt: I’d like to put out an album, which means lots of writing so I need to continue working on that. Sometimes things come to you easily when it comes to writing and then there are times when the slate is blank. I guess novel writers must experience the same kind of thing. Of course, most times if you experience something in your life that’s monumental, then the writing flows out of you. So I hope to put out an awesome album with lots of great songs.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Colt: College, believe it or not, I’ll be graduating from high school. So I have the summer to write songs, play out and continue to do what I love until I have to go off to U of An in the fall. I’m studying music & business so I need to focus on that come Sept. But I’ll continue to write & perform when I can because it’s what’s flows through my veins & brings me joy.

Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?

Colt: Yeah, I hope I bring as much joy to people with my music as my fans have given to me with their support & kindness.
