Review Fix chats with MEGAWAT’s Joe Casey, who discusses the band’s new single, Wake Up.
About the Band:
MEGAWHAT is set to release their dynamic debut single, “Wake Up,” out everywhere on July 5th, 2024. Comprised of Chris Sanders (guitar/vocals), Victor Cavola (drums), Christopher Swenson (bass/vocals) & Joe Casey (guitar/vocals), the band’s humble origins began in the backwater bars of Memphis, Tennessee. Over the years, they’ve grown a nationwide presence with their radio-ready rock, fusing raw guitar sounds with polished anthemic pop production. Review Fix: How did the band come together?
Joe Casey: We’d all played in different musical configurations over the previous years. At some point, the four of us just randomly ended up on stage together — for one song. Afterwards, we all looked at each other with some sense that something had just happened. We made a big noise. So we figured we should try to make it happen again. Everything was starting to come together when the world suddenly imploded about four years ago. So it took a bit of effort to get us all in the studio to do what we were supposed to be doing. Some of us were lost in our own lives. Some of us were trapped by our own vices. Major distances had to be overcome. But, ultimately we pulled our shit together and cemented ourselves through these songs we’d written over the years.
Review Fix: What makes Megawhat stand out?
Casey: There are certain times when we’re the kind of band that wears its soul on its face. We’re painfully honest about the fact that we still believe in the power of the rock n’ roll song. It’s completely out of step with popular culture at the moment, but we tend to damn the torpedoes when it comes to what we do. The song rules above all else.
Review Fix: How was Wake Up written?
Casey: Most songs are written in some sort of extended fever dream state. There’s a lot of sweat and you’re not sure exactly what’s real and what’s not real. You dig down deep within yourself and hope to find something worth pulling out. Add in a well-placed minor chord and you’re off to the races. “Wake Up” is a good example of that process. You dive head-first into the deep end and swim for your life. Three and a half minutes later, we thought we might have something. We dig it, anyway.
Review Fix: What’s your favorite lyric from it?
Casey: You can’t beat the line at the end of the second chorus: “I wanna make up a something-I-can-live-with reason why”. It seems to sum up a pretty honest worldview. Seems relatable to me, at least.
Review Fix: Who do you think will enjoy this song the most?
Casey: If you happen to like real humans playing real instruments in a room together, you may end up digging what we’ve created here.
Review Fix: If you had to pick someone to cover it, who would it be?
Casey: Taylor Swift, most definitely. If she put it on her next album, the song would most assuredly end up paying for itself…!
Review Fix: What’s next?
Casey: On a purely existential level, it’s the next breath you take, the next step you make. It’s whatever keeps you moving forward. On a practical level, a full album is up next. Although we’re still trying to figure out if it’s actually fashionable to release a full album. We still believe in it as an art form, but sometimes it feels like we might be the only ones.
Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?
Casey: It’s a fractured world out there, and it’s tough to know if rock n’ roll still has a place in it. Luckily, we’ve been told by our elders that there was actually a time when rock n’ roll really and truly mattered. Whether it still does or not is irrelevant, when it comes down to it. But if we can make some noisy rock n’ roll with just a little bit of that essential spirit still living somewhere inside of it, then we’re cool. There’s still a lot of power there.
