I-Tunes Single of the Week: Julieta Venegas’ ‘Otra Cosa’

Julieta Venegas is not the most standard, nor traditional musician currently seen throughout the music scene. Not only is she a singer, she presents herself as an instrumentalist and a songwriter as well. In total, Venegas has released six rock and pop albums, all performed in Spanish. Growing up in Tijuana, while learning and playing music at a very young age, Venegas has gradually proved her progress and individuality that differs from any other entertainer.

The first track, “Bien O Mal,” off of Venegas’s newest album, “Otra Cosa,” is one that all should give a chance. Even though the entire song is sang in Spanish, a tune can easily be appreciated for everything else around the language.

The sound of her voice comes off as clear, calm, but happy, allowing non Spanish-speaking listeners to forget that they cannot comprehend the meaning of the lyrics. This particular type of song can lift one’s spirit, regardless of the message that Venegas is sending.

Since Venegas is capable of playing accordion, acoustic guitar and keyboard, she truly confirms her abilities in “Bien O Mal.” Such a track would still be joyful without vocals. It’s also appealing to discover music without drums, making Venegas dissimilar from a majority of bands and/or solo artists.

Giving distinct genres attention without ever realizing it was might pleasurable is what a true music lover is. They can easily acknowledge and be appreciative of all melodies of different cultures and would be able to enjoy the fascinating performance that Venegas portrays.
