Episode Commentary: Need for Weed
“Squidbillies,†much like “Aqua Teen Hunger Force,†is an Adult Swim comedy that allows you to simply shut your brain off and enjoy the ample amounts of bipolarity and hilarity encompassed within each episode. It doesn’t have to make sense to be funny and fueled by characters that lack logic completely, the show never ceases to amaze in its effort to make you laugh out loud, all the while scratching your head.
As far as its season premiere is concerned, your brain will have no choice but to take a nap as the animated sitcom is completely off the wall and gets the new season off on the right foot, well… tentacle.
Running her own marijuana business out of the basement of the Cuyler home, Aunt Lil, with the aid of presumably dozens of naked Mexican men, has Dougal County in the palms of her tentacles, as everyone seems to be getting high.
Seeing the sheriff with his “drug†possum, early on, trying to get to the bottom of this caper, proves that not only is the show’s comedic formula is as potent as ever, it’s possibly at its strongest yet.
Eager to get in on the action, Early tries to score some of his own weed, but is forced, for some crazy reason, to get a prescription from a doctor. With Grandma in tow, Early gets his prescription.
Insert total chaos here.
If the show wasn’t crazy as it is, imagine Early with a bag over his head while holding his shotgun backwards in a pot-head move to get munchies that you’ll never forget.
But who cares. In his own words, “Finally, I can feel comfortable in social situations.â€
In spite of all of this, you, too, will feel right at home.
When the sheriff finally gives in and joins the fun, you’ll realize that like most episodes of this show, there’s no real point to any of the nonsense. However, that doesn’t mean you won’t be smiling and laughing throughout.
Add in some killer tunes from rock-jam powerhouse Widespread Panic, who end up playing a bigger part in the episode than you would have originally thought, and you both have a stoner’s dream come true and great first episode of the new season.
Damn, it feels good to be back in Dougal County.
