Sounds like the name of a band, doesn’t it? Wrong. Marina and the Diamonds (real name, Marina Lambrini Diamandis) is actually a Welsh singer-songwriter that comes from a Greek background. Interestingly enough, the name contains Diamandis’s first name and the translation of her last name, which is “Diamonds” in Greek.
It’s somewhat strange when a solo artist uses an entire title for their stage name, but that bizarre trait perfectly suits the music in which Marina and the Diamonds performs.
Her particular style varies from keyboard-based ballads to up-tempo new wave tracks that include a full-band sound behind her voice.
For the past three years, in total, Marina and the Diamonds has released three EPs, along with a full length album called “The Family Jewels.” “I Am Not A Robot” being the third track listed in this 14 song CD.
“I Am Not A Robot” can probably be considered the most exotic, yet awkward tune of 2010.
In this song, Diamandis speaks about how all individuals shouldn’t pretend to be anything that they’re not. Everybody is better off being hated for what they are, rather than being loved for what they’re not. Her choice of title for this particular track simply symbolizes the fact that Marina and the Diamonds is her own person and she does not and will not display herself as fake.
Her message expressed in the lyrics should very well be respected, but the way she sings would somewhat throw off anybody who would listen to this track for the first time.
Marina and the Diamonds definitely has skill and control when it comes to her abilities, but her voice can be noticed as gargley every now and then. Her tempos are constantly going up and down, from high-pitched to deep. But with the genre she falls under, this should be expected.
The background melody behind this one of a kind vocalist promotes a chipper, sweet, soothing and catchy sound that is on repeat for the entire three and a half-minute song. The music itself is plain, but suitable, so Diamandis’s vocals are constantly being recognized.
For a person that might fool audiences with a believable band name, Marina and the Diamonds most certainly deserves props for conducting an uncommon genre that she isn’t afraid of adding to the list of typical music.
This only proves that she isn’t a robot.
