It’s a different taste from Ne-Yo’s forthcoming fourth album, Libra Scale, which is due out later this year in September, so get ready. Sure, Ne-Yo has done dance music before, but this track is a bit more eclectic than anyone would expect.
Like so many of his current pop cohorts, “Beautiful Monster” seems to be making the move from electronic-influenced R&B to full on Ibiza-style dance music.
Overall, Beautiful Monster is a full-on slice of Euro-pop, built by Ne-Yo and his production friends, Stargate, entirely out of trance-y keyboard lines and a pulsating drumbeat.
The song is that catchy, it’s throbbing. NeYo’s creativity and music is in full-effect here, but it fails to compare with some of his older stuff. That won’t stop the dance crowd from eating it up though. As a result, expect to hear this one blasting out of the speakers, just not at every club for the rest of the summer.
For fans who’ve already been crying foul on YouTube and pleading for “the old Ne-Yo” to come back, those are fickle sayers, who hold back creative talents like Ne-Yo and Stargate from taking chances, chances that perhaps the artist shouldn’t be taking. Who knows, maybe the rest of the record might have to pull out some new tricks, but “Beautiful Monster” is a welcome reminder of why we fell in love with R & B’s resident Gentleman in the first place.
“Beautiful Monster marks” Ne-Yo’s first single in over a year-and-a-half, following the release of his RIAA platinum album “Year of the Gentleman,” which spawned hit singles “Closer,” “Miss Independent” and “Mad.”
For now, even though this track has some promise, Ne-Yo should stick to R&B.
