Episode Commentary: “Just the Tip”
Aside from seeing the uber sexy Alanna Ubach walk around naked for about two minutes, there’s little to enjoy in the season premiere of “Hung.â€
Seeing Tanya [Jane Adams] resort to approaching random hookers and a pimp for advice to get Ray [Thomas Jane] back in line is smirk inducing, but it is far from laugh out loud funny. The same thing goes for Lenore’s [Rebecca Creskoff ] speech at the art museum when detailing where she sees the future of Happiness Consultants leading to.
It’s almost as if these actors are so ready to take these parts and run with them, but the writing isn’t allowing them to go as hard as they’d like.
For a show that is supposed to be outrageous and sexy, the season premiere had little of both.
However, with the tension beginning to build between Lenore, Tanya and Ray, as well as Ray’s interest in his ex-wife, Jessica [Ann Heche], there looks to be plenty of drama this season. Add in the situation with Jessica and her failing marriage and might even be able to say there is more plot depth this season than in the first.
Nonetheless, you have to wonder why writers Colette Burson & Dmitry Lipkin had Drecker involved with a pregnant woman to start the season. Sure, we understand that Drecker isn’t really a legitimate prostitute and that this connection brings him closer to his wife than he has been in ages, but so far, he’s mostly been with older women or those with mental problems [aside from Lenore], making for drama that isn’t exactly endearing to the eyes.
After watching a show the likes of “True Blood†for an hour, it’s kind of hard to keep pace in the smut department and “Hung†doesn’t even try to compete.
Perhaps that’s why the season premiere had two million less viewers than HBO’s sexy blood bath.
In the end, maybe that’s to the show’s benefit, but at this point, after a first season full of highs and lows, “Hung†must begin to cement itself in season two.
Or else it may lose its audience entirely.
