Originally formed in Toronto, Canada, Dragonette is a New Wave/Synthpop/Electropop trio that consists of husband and wife Dan Kurtz (bass) and Martina Sorbara (vocals) and Joel Stouffer on drums. Even though they have been around since 2005, their scene is not yet popular throughout the United States, but booming in the UK.
Dragonette is currently signed to Mercury Records, but before that, they produced a self-titled EP that came out just as fast as they became a band. Eventually becoming signed, their full length album, “Galore,” dropped in 2007. It was clear that they were working quickly in order to climb the music industry’s ladder.
Taking advantage of being signed to more than one label, Dragonette grabbed the opportunity of adding Universal Records to their list. On September 29, 2009, their second CD, “Fixin to Thrill” was released.
“Pick Up The Phone” is Dragonette’s second hit single off of “Fixin to Thrill” and it finely represents who they are and what style they have created as a group.
Throughout the track, Sorbara sings about a partying lifestyle that two young and average people share together. It involves doing everything they’ve always dreamt about. With a soothing and gentle voice, she shouts the catchy chorus that constantly repeats the title of the song.
Played by only two people, the background music that Kurtz and Stouffer concoct is surprisingly chipper and booming. Even though the drum beats are simple, the guitar riffs allow the song to be happy-sounding.
Speaking about a wild and filled lifestyle, this is definitely a track that would be appropriate for any type of prom and/or party. It croons and energizes to the end. If the song were longer, listeners would be able to appreciate it even more.
Overall, “Pick Up The Phone” is the perfect dance tune and provides the air with tons of versatility.
