Still Fab

Fabolous has been topping the hip/hop/rap billboard charts since his first studio album release “Ghetto Fabolous” in 2001. Nine years later his latest album “There is No Competition 2: The Grieving Music Mixtape” drops with the same style that has made him a consistent hit maker.

Always original this EP is a prelude to Fabolous’ next album “Laso’s Way” which will be released later this year. The album begins with “The Eulogy” a tongue in cheek reference to the “fake MCs” who “can no longer be with us.” Essentially Fabolous has killed the competition with his master beats.

The satire-like tone continues with “The Wake” as Fabolous plays with the idea of different ways in which he “kills” the competition. He mainly does this by his lyrical rhymes which somehow give him the power to steal away other rappers’ women away from them.

As this genre of music goes Fabolous chiefly raps about how amazing he is and how he has become a woman magnet. It’s not the most original rhyming that you’ve heard about these themes however his references will make you remember classic films such as New Jack City where he rhymes about the CMB in “I’m Raw.” Still there is only so many ways the N-word can be referenced before it gets in the way of the rocking beat.

“Body Ya” and “Body Count” are more of the same I’m the best rapper around and no one can top him bravado. Although these are two solid tracks on the album they both say the same thing making them repetitious and uninteresting.

As a group effort “Body Bag” featuring Cam’Ron and Vado is the best song on the album as Fabolous is more of a guest star on this track. The lyrical rhymes flow between the rappers and its laid-back beat makes for a smooth listening experience. The track “You be Killin Em” continues a lyrical styling that will make you appreciate the way a man admires his woman.

Overall “There is No Competition 2: The Grieving Music Mixtape” for his fans is a solid precursor for his sixth album yet to come. However, it may not bring about any new admirers.
