Recently formed in March of 2008, Hey Monday is an American trio from West Palm Beach, Florida. Depending on the songs that they have created, their style varies from power pop, pop punk, pop rock and alternative rock.
The fact that their lead vocalist is a girl donates even more flavor to Hey Monday’s approach.
Even though they have only been around for a little over two years, former members, Elliot James and Michael “Jersey” Moritary, were dropped between the years of 2009 and 2010.
Their current official members include Cassadee Pope (vocals), Mike Gentile (lead guitar) and Alex Lipshaw (rhythm guitar). When it comes to touring, Patrick McKenzie offers his drumming, percussion and back-up vocal abilities in order for Hey Monday’s tracks to obtain a complete sound. McKenzie might not be a certified band mate, but he offers plenty of skill that allows the group to continue being successful when performing concerts.
Hey Monday’s first debut album, “Hold On Tight,” was released in 2008 and their newest EP, “Beneath It All,” was established in 2010.
Though their upcoming CD has yet to be announced and won’t be sold in stores until 2011, this striving group of youngsters still manages to be a part of many popular and outstanding tours.
They had the opportunity to perform at Vans Warped Tour 2010 with well-known bands such as, Attack Attack!, Breathe Carolina, Emmure, Four Year Strong, Parkway Drive, Pierce the Veil, Set Your Goals, Suicide Silence, White Chapel and You Me At Six.
Hey Monday’s first and most popular hit single, “I Don’t Wanna Dance,” comes off of “Beneath It All.” It is definitely considered to be the track that allows the entire EP to stand out.
Pope’s voice releases a very cute and catchy sound. She gives the song a vibe of innocence towards love and relationships.
She sings about a boy that once had his chance but decided to throw it all away. The thought of him ever asking her to dance is totally out of the question.
The concept of the lyrics are pretty typical and disappointing. The background music doesn’t flow too well with what the song is about.
First time listeners of this tune might ask themselves why the music isn’t up to standards of what Hey Monday chooses as their genre. “I Don’t Wanna Dance” gives off a bubblegum pop flavor rather than the pop punk taste that audiences expect.
On the other hand, Gentile, Lipshaw and McKenzie concoct a chipper and lively harmony that can be addicting. The entire melody contains a happy-go-lucky aura.
All in all, “I Don’t Wanna Dance” should be given a chance, but it’s the type of single that may be easily forgotten. At least Hey Monday was willing to switch up their sound and try something new, rather than sticking to the genre that they are required to follow.
