It wasn’t exactly a day off for Jim Bible, but he’ll take it.
Growing Ocean Spray cranberries on his farm in Black River Wisconsin for 29 years, Bible sometimes spends 15 hours a day in the bogs.
A second-generation grower, Bible has seen it all on the marsh, but New York City rarely gets to see anything like what was on display at Rockefeller center on Tuesday afternoon.
“People love cranberries for their uniqueness,†he said, knee-deep in a 1,500 foot cranberry bog. “This is a great picture too because of all of the colors. This is why you always see this in the commercials. â€
Quickly becoming a tradition in the city, this marks the sixth year that Ocean Spray has showcased its crop at Rockefeller center.
Essentially a pool filled with floating cranberries, the bog is on display for three days, with the first designated for a pre-Thanksgiving meal on Tuesday’s episode of the Martha Stewart show. During the show, 45 children from New York City public schools will eat a holiday-inspired meal from Stewart’s recipe book on the bog.
Tending to the crop alongside a handful of other growers in preparation for the show, Bible was enjoying the opportunity to speak to customers.
“You get such good feedback,†said Bible. “They always tell me that they love cranberries and to keep up the good job. Today, I’ve already spoken to people from New Zealand, Australia and Germany. You get the satisfaction of knowing they appreciate your product. â€
Over the course of the next few days, Ocean Spray will also have Bible and the rest of their growers on hand to discuss the history of the fruit in addition to having the characters from their television advertisements on hand to answer questions.
As far as Bible is concerned, you can’t have Thanksgiving without cranberries. Nevertheless, he believes his job is more than harvesting a festive fruit.
If the handfuls of passersby swiping sample-sized craisins and cranberry juice bottles from the waiting hands of Ocean Spray employees were any indication, Bible might have a case.
“You’re feeding the population,†he said. “And giving them a little bright spot during their day.â€
