Father Like Son

After a season and a half of wondering, it looks like Kenny Powers got his ability at tossing the lies around from his father.

A brief, yet interesting exchange at the beginning of the latest episode of “Eastbound and Down” proves this as “Eduardo Sanchez,” played by the always cool Don Johnson, has no problem making a fantasy land to live in.

Sounds familiar doesn’t it?

A bit better at concealing the truth than his son, Sanchez seemingly has it made, living in a Mexican Mansion, while running his own business and caring to his seemingly autistic son and spicy cougar of a wife. However, just like his son, the wheels of his deceit fall off the car halfway through and Kenny realizes his father is probably worse off than he currently is.

At the same time, Stevie is trying to keep his relationship with his Mexican flame together while keeping her updated via cell phone. Their conversation, albeit short is perhaps the funniest moment of the episode, as Stevie continues to prove that his presence on the show is needed nearly just as much as Kenny’s.

Lets face it. As hilarious as Danny McBride is as Powers, he needs someone else on-screen to even everything out. Having someone like Stevie [Steve Little] being so supportive of his schemes gives him some validity. Otherwise, he’d just be some retard running around doing whatever he wants, because he wants. It would still be funny, but the dichotomy of the show would be much different.

In the end, that’s the exact reason why Johnson’s character ends up not being as cool as Kenny and why this episode works. All he has is a son who blindly follows him around, while Kenny at least has one person who believes in his vision.

Where this vision will ultimately take him remains unseen, but even a blind man knows that Stevie will be close behind.
