Episode Commentary: The Case of the Grievous Clerical Error!
Between Ray’s relationship with the elf chick and his still harboring feelings for Leah, Jonathan’s newest case involving kidnapped dogs and George going in for surgery, there’s plenty of things going on in this week’s episode of “Bored to Death. ”
So much so that we don’t follow-up on some of the new characters introduced in the previous two episodes. Regardless, it’s still a fast-paced episode that goes the series proud.
Over the past two episodes, Ray has been the center of attention and rightfully so, considering how under-utilized he’s been for most of this season. Seeing him setting out of his depression and beginning to go after what he wants, this new proactive Ray is probably funnier than the alcoholic stoner we’re used to seeing.
The same thing can be said of George, who was strong in the face of certain death. Now that he has escaped the clutches of cancer, his character seems forever changed. Well, not really. He may, and most likely return to his old ways, but with a new-found fervor and passion. At the very least, more quote worthy storytelling from his character is always a plus.
Through all of their changes, it seems like this is the episode Jonathan understands even more so how important they are to him. The scene between George and him towards the end of the show may be a bit too emotional for some who are used to the antics we normally see on the show, but overall, it was pretty touching.
Even stoners and writers with tunnel-vision are capable of expressing their feelings and this episode shows us a softer side of three characters that usually have trouble sharing what’s in their heart. Overall, it may not go down as the funniest episode this season, but it’s still one of the best.
