While our first 10 hours of Fallout New Vegas were anything but horrible, the overall lack of charisma and reliance on the Fallout 3 engine had us a little cranky. With another 10 hours of gameplay under our belts however, we can easily say things have changed.
Missions involving the White Glove Society and a clan of cult ghouls definitely added more spice to the story. Meeting Mr. House early in this cycle as well gave the game much more of a purpose. Looking like you may inherit New Vegas if you play your cards right, this game’s story just picked up big-time.
The addition of so many extra side quests, originally thought by us to be annoying is actually turning out to be quite fun. While it takes us away from the main story a bit too much at times, it allows you to explore the Mojave and meet all the different types of people, clans, animals and everything else.
The fact that you can have a companion around much sooner than Fallout 3 is also fun, as you feel like this person is carving their role in your journey with you.
In spite of all of this though, the game’s bugs have reared their ugly heads a bit too often. In the pool room of the Ultra Lux, our character literally fell through the floor and managed to float back over the course of a few seconds. There was another incident where a bark scorpion’s stinger was the only thing that was above ground. Lastly, there were even times when our companions would get stuck on the map and not be able to move at all or in even worse situations, attack friendly brahmin for no reason.
The overall enemy range seems to be a bit off in the game, as unassuming brahmin show up as enemies. As well, it’s almost impossible to find locations using the pip boy 3000. At times, you’ll feel like you’re right where you need to be, to only find out you’re either on the wrong floor or not as close as you thought you were. As a result, the game can get frustrating at times.
Nevertheless, if the story continues to get juicier and the dudes and dudettes over at Bethesda release a patch to get rid of the game’s bugs, then Fallout New Vegas would easily be one of the best titles of the year.
