If you’ve never heard of stand-up comedian Kevin Hart before, after watching “Seriously Funny,” you’ll not only remember his name, but you’ll be repeating the majority of his jokes for weeks.
Combining a silly wit, with a sense of urban realism, Hart channels the likes of stand-up greats such as Dave Chappelle and DL Hughley, but in his own way, is more charismatic and approachable. While his comedy is geared towards African-Americans, if you’re not a part of that demographic, you’ll never get the feeling that you’re out of the loop (the way someone like Chapelle sometimes used to make his audience feel in his performances). Instead, with relatable topics such as relationships, parenting and childhood, his routine has something for everyone.
When discussing his childhood, Hart is at his best. Everyone remembers the first we times they got in trouble for cussing in public and Hart’s retelling of this moment is easily the best moment of the show. Seeing him stack as many profanities on top of one another the same way a child would do it, innocently, yet hilarious, is just one example of his comedic genius.
His thoughts on women and relationships are another. If you’ve ever been married or in a relationship long enough to appreciate your alone time, you’ll be right at home with this part of his routine. Funny because it’s true, Hart is able to tell us his honest, unabashed thoughts and make them enjoyable. That alone shows us his skill on stage.
His energy on stage helps him as well. When describing the way “Thugs” speak, Hart quickly gets into character. The same thing can be said when he portrays his wife or his ex-con uncle.
During this performance, Hart even takes a stab at his audience members. Former Cleveland Cavaliers Lebron James and Shaquille O’Neal were in the audience and after a few shout outs to them, Hart finds a way to discuss the way O’Neal falls and doesn’t mind doing some impersonations. Another great moment in the show, Hart proves he’s more than a good comedian, he’s a quick think and naturally funny. Because of this Hart quickly makes you a fan of his work and someone you don’t want to get off the stage.
To be able to accomplish this feat in just 67 minutes confirms Hart’s ability on stage and makes “Seriously Funny” a must-see comedy routine.
