With Kevin Nash now in the WWE, Booker T on hiatus [from the ring at least, he was a guest commentator last night on Smackdown] and Sting apparently gearing up for a run in the WWE as well, TNA apparently spent the entire week rewriting their “THEY†storyline for Impact!.
While the end result wasn’t exactly mind-blowing and makes the connection of Crimson, Kurt Angle and Scott Steiner a weird one, in the end, seeing Fourtune going babyface might have been the best thing for the company. After a 2010 where TNA found out it wasn’t ready to take on the WWE in the Monday Night Wars, they spent too much time developing their competition’s former stars and not enough on their homegrown ones.
While guys the likes of Mr. Anderson, Matt Morgan and Jeff Hardy will play a role if TNA does step up its game, the foursome of Kazarian, AJ Styles, James Storm and Robert Roode should be the guys getting the big push. Seeing Styles ream out Eric Bischoff over all of his mistakes with the company over the last year should make for some interesting television, even if the company didn’t want to work this storyline for months.
At the same time, the company is now completely void of heels, as the once super strong Immortal only has the two security guards Gunner and Murphy, the Hardys and the extra-green Rob Terry. Abyss wasn’t on TV this week, still kayfabing his injury from two weeks prior.
Even worse, according to several of the dirt sheet sites, Hulk Hogan no-showed the event.
Could TNA be in a complete state of flux?
For the time being, the company needs as many new heels as possible. With Samoa Joe wasting away in a ridiculous angle with The Pope, the creative team would be smart to pick him up for Immortal and have him face off with Styles. Even though it’s a match the fans have seen before, Joe needs a high quality opponent to bring out the best in him. Two years ago, he was the top star in the company and it’s a shame to see him wasting away like this.
Reports from the dirt sheet sites also say that Hernandez is back and has made a heel turn, continuing his feud from last year with Matt Morgan [who looked like he was primed to get a big push, to only find up off Impact completely this week and sparsely used over the last three weeks]. Could he also join Immortal? Again, while it’s apparent that TNA hasn’t learned from its mistakes with stables over the years, could this time be different?
Who knows, but the bottom line is simple. Even though they are essentially being forced to, TNA is going to be using its own stars to drive its biggest angle.
Lets see how long that’s the case.
