The seventh annual Afro-Punk Festival, which will take place in Commodore Barry Park in August, has just announced the lineup on its blog—and music fans across the board are sure to be pleased.
Based in Brooklyn, the festival, which we covered last year, has hosted many up-and-coming, genre-bending acts from the black community with some big name headliners to close the night. This year, the lineup is even more incredible: among the well-known acts set to appear are Santigold, Janelle Monáe and headlining artist Cee Lo Green.
Monáe is no stranger to the festival; she gained major recognition when she played in both 2008 and 2009, back when the festival was hosted in the BAM parking lot and spanned almost an entire week. Green and Santi are new to the festival. Last year’s featured headliner was Mos Def.
Other confirmed acts are set to include Res, Ninjasonik, Fishbone, Jay Electronica, Toro Y Moi, Joi, Toshi Reagon, Cerebral Ballzy, Straight Line Stitch, Gordon Voidwell, Reggie Watts, Joe Jordans Experiment and Rocky Business.
While last year’s concert was ticketed, this year the two-day event will again be free to the public, perhaps because the show last year had far too many mishaps regarding sound. The show is also set to feature the “Afro-Punk Bites & Beats Food Truck Festival,†hosting over 20 food trucks from throughout the city. They also will host the Nike Battle For the Streets Skate and BMX Competition.
Afro-Punk 2011 will take place on August 27 and 28, nearly a month later than their usual July dates. Additional performers have yet to be announced, but the official schedule will be announced as the actual dates approach.
