Episode Commentary: The Divorce
Just when you thought Larry David’s character had found some semblance of calmness, he goes and ruins it all…again.
In typical “Curb Your Enthusiasm†fashion, the newest season of the show promises to be as bizarre and hilarious as ever before.
After seven seasons, it’s obvious that Larry will never learn to keep his mouth shut. Regardless, the show is anything but repetitive. It’s predictable at times, but still hilarious and comfortable.
With his impending reconnection with his ex-wife out of the question, Larry not only has to deal with being single again, but he has to go through a nasty divorce settlement. Ironically, that sets up a chain reaction and Marty Funkhouser ultimately finds himself divorced as well. Add in a first menstrual cycle, a Swedish lawyer masquerading as a Jew and the Los Angeles Dodgers and you have an episode that delivers on all fronts.
Unlike many other sitcoms that lose their luster over time, Curb continues to provide laughs because it never stretches itself too far. It has a great cast of characters that all do something well and never forces them to go beyond that. In particular, while Larry [David] is up to his old shenanigans this episode, Leon [JB Smoove] and Susie [Essman] provide the show with tons of laughs with off the wall comments. Jeff Garlin and Cheryl Hines are rock solid as always and provide their usual share of laughs too.
The way it all goes down in the first few minutes of the show sets up a hilarious episode with several small plotlines that all deliver. Leon’s rant at the end of the episode is enough to make this episode memorable, but there’s so much more. Even after seven seasons, the show continues to be written in a way that new fans will find something to appreciate and hardcore fans will love.
Even though Larry’s life currently seems in bad shape, don’t let it get you down; he’ll find a way to wreak more havoc next week.
