Headline tour kicks off August 3rd in Minneapolis, MN

It’s official: “This City” featuring Lupe Fiasco is the first single from SOUL PUNK, the debut solo album from Patrick Stump, arriving fall 2011 on Island Records. Stump steps up to the plate after setting the world on fire for nearly a decade as lead singer, composer, and guitarist for Chicago-based multi-platinum three-time MTV VMA-winning Island Records group Fall Out Boy.

After wrapping up a leg of dates with (occasional collaborator) Bruno Mars and Janelle Monae on their Hooligans In Wondaland Tour, Stump’s next major date is his hometown Lollapalooza in Chicago’s Grant Park, August 5-7th.

Stump discussed SOUL PUNK and “This City” with online music site A.V. Club: “Before Food & Liquor came out,” he said, referring to fellow Chicagoan and collaborator Lupe Fiasco’s 2006 debut, “he and I were talking about working on something together… I actually wrote the hook for ‘This City’ with him in mind before I decided to use it for SOUL PUNK, so when the label asked me if I’d be interested in doing a remix with an MC he was the only real way I’d say yes.” Check out the story – and a link to “This City” – at http://www.avclub.com/articles/hear-patrick-stumps-new-single-with-lupe-fiasco,58209/.

In addition to his work in Fall Out Boy – their studio and live albums, DVD projects, and more than 1,300 live shows around the world since 2001 – Patrick Stump has also worked in the studio with dozens of outside artists. Initially a guest vocalist, he soon graduated to work as a producer (and co-writer) with the likes of Bruno Mars, Lupe Fiasco, Timbaland, Cobra Starship, the Roots, Tyga, Gym Class Heroes, and others. Onstage, Patrick has performed with Kanye West, Jay-Z, Rihanna, Elvis Costello, and Lil’ Wayne, to name a few.

Earlier this year, Patrick released his debut solo EP Truant Wave, built around the single release, “Spotlight (Oh Nostalgia),” whose video was featured on RollingStone.com. An alternate version of the song, “Spotlight (New Regrets)” will be included on SOUL PUNK. The songs on the new album hit a variety of themes, including Patrick’s love for his hometown of Chicago in “This City”; a scathing treatise Madoff-era materialism on “Greed”; and a reminiscent musing on naïve sexuality on “Allie.”

Covering his spring shows, critics put the spotlight squarely on Patrick’s vocal strength: “Stump’s rich, scale-hopping voice helped propel Fall Out Boy beyond the pop-punk realm and into Grammy-nom territory,” New York’s Village Voice said, after his sold-out three-night residency at Joe’s Pub. “Halfway through his set of muscular, R&B-heavy solo material, Stump cleared the stage and moved to the keyboard to play Prince’s ‘Nothing Compares 2 U,’ and it was then that the power of The Voice really came across. Watching him, one gets the sense of a savant who’s fully cognizant of the exceptional nature of his talent, but determined to treat it as a thing to have fun with…”

In deference to one of his primal influences, Prince, Patrick left nothing to chance on his debut album, playing all the instruments on SOUL PUNK by himself, including drums, bass, electric and acoustic guitars, piano, analog synths, drum kit, marching drums, percussion, trumpet, valve trombone, alto and tenor saxophones, mandolin, guitelele, and manipulating various found sounds and ambient noises.

As the title suggests, SOUL PUNK straddles Patrick’s roots in R&B and punk, directions that were not always given reign in his music for Fall Out Boy. “At no point in any of this has it been my thing,” he told Alternative Press of his work with Fall Out Boy and previous bands, in a candid interview for their June issue, “I’ve never had my thing. I wanted to do my thing and I wanted to do it my way… I wanted to set the tone for the future. [SOUL PUNK is] kind of like a calling card.”

“It’s more distinctly me,” Patrick went on to tell Details magazine (March 2011). “I’ve been making music most of my life, and this is the first time I’ve heard my ideas unfiltered. It’s entirely plausible this is what I might have been doing the whole time.”
