Tempers flair, filet mignon turns into veal and weird science experiments are abound in this week’s episode of “Hell’s Kitchen.”
Elise is at it again with her teammates. Apparently, she feels that the red team’s strategy is to eliminate the “strongest chef.” She doesn’t realize that everyone is after her because of her bad attitude.
As the chefs go downstairs for the day’s challenge, they see a chemistry lab. That lab belongs to two chefs who have fused science with cooking to make some bizarre dishes. One of them is a pizza that that changes flavor into a dessert. What does this have to do with today’s challenge? Ramsey wants the chefs to go back to basics by cooking a protein by either boiling, steaming, or poaching.
This produces some interesting results. On of them is Monterey’s eggs benedict with prawns. Sure enough, it was a failure. Speaking of failures, the red team had two. The first is they went with Elizabeth’s dish instead of Carrie’s after Elise talked them into putting up Elizabeth’s. Turns out Elizabeth’s dish was bad and, after Ramsey asked Carrie to taste hers, said that they should’ve put up Carrie’s dish. This is just Elise adding fire to her feud with Carrie, nothing else. The second is Krupa mistaking filet mignon for veal. Ramsey even said that the red team didn’t even bother to notice Krupa’s mistake.
Now, how is it possible for a seasoned chef to confuse filet mignon with veal? They are two completely different types of meat and different colors. One’s red, one’s white. This is just unacceptable.
This ends in a tie with Ramsey having to side with the blue team due to these mistakes. Their punishment: clean the hot tub, the fountain outside and prep for both kitchens. All the while, Elise is just stands around complaining.
On a high note, at the spa, where the blue team earned a reward, it’s always nice to see a guy getting waxed for the first time. Seeing a guy act tough about getting waxed and then cry over the pain always shuts them up and makes them consider using a razor instead.
At dinner service, halibut sashimi is served table side and even more mess ups are served in the kitchen starting with Krupa messing up the risotto. Again, messing up a risotto this late in the game is confusing, considering this is one of the dishes they have been cooking since episode one.
That’s not as bad as Jonathan completely forgetting the menu though. How can he forget after five services? Tommy is confused, does not communicate and continually burns a cod while Monterey continually undercooks wellingtons. They’re both thrown out.
The red team doesn’t fare so well either. Krupa continually messed up the spaghetti by undercooking it and even forgetting the spaghetti in one instance. She’s thrown out.
The undercooking is not really her problem because Gina did not communicate at all and Krupa was forced to bring up her spaghetti dish with Gina. Gina’s lack of communication continues with Elise. This causes both of them to get thrown out.
In the dorm, Elsie is convinced that everyone is “throwing her under a bus.†She is taking this way too personally.
There is no winning team this time. “You’re going backwards,” Ramsey told both teams after dinner service. Episode five does seem like the right spot for the chefs to go backwards. At least they finished dinner service.
Monterey, Tommy, Krupa, and Elise get nominated for elimination. Ramsey instead chooses to eliminate Gina after Elise and Krupa convince him that she is the weakest.
The blue team may have some problems, but they can be easily mended. The red team, however, is very close to starting World War III with each other with Elise leading the charge. First she starts with Carrie, then Krupa, now Gina.
If you want drama in a kitchen, here it is.
Its name is Elise.
