Star Spangled and Mediocre

“Captain America” is good marvel film that could’ve been great.

What this film had on its side was a superb cast, a decent story, and most importantly, a great villain. However, with most of the positives this film had, there were more negatives that will anger the audience.

In the end, the film isn’t better than the sum of its parts- a waste of a plethora of potential.

Chris Evans, [“Cellular”] plays Steve Rogers AKA Captain America, a small, but gritty underdog Brooklyn kid, who after many attempts at joining the military because of his size and asthma, finally gets his shot and becomes part of a program that transforms him into this bulky, taller and more muscular super soldier who takes on the Red Skull, played by Hugo Weaving, [“The Matrix”].

This film has a spectacular cast, one of which includes Tommy Lee Jones [“No Country For Old Men”], who plays Colonel Chester Phillips. Phillips is gritty and his sense of humor is priceless. He draws several laughs throughout the film.

Surprisingly, Evans also does a great job portraying “Captain America.” Originally, there were doubts by fanboys worldwide to if he would play the role effectively. There is no doubt that he succeeded, which was a huge plus for the film.

Unfortunately, it’s not enough.

Why? Because the story seemed to go off track at times, which focused mostly on how a sequel will be set up. Also, it seemed as if the action scenes were limited due to the fact that they did not have a beginning. When there was action throughout the film, it was limited and it seemed like Joe Johnston rushed each shot. What could’ve been great action sequences for a Marvel film turned out being a complete dud.

This is obvious during an encounter between Captain America and Red Skull. Talk about limited. It was almost a joke how badly fought their battle was. Ultimately, it was a waste of a perfectly good villain.

Overall, “Captain America” was a good film that could’ve been much better. The below average action scenes and lackluster finale made this film fun at times, but mostly inconsistent. Although there is a bonus scene at the end of the credits with a surprise teaser, it is not enough to wow the audience.

I grew up in Bensonhurst Brooklyn, the same neighborhood many of the best mafia films of our day were based on, idolizing guys like Robert Deniro, Martin Scorsese and Al Pacino. I'm also a big sports fan and follow the New York Yankees immensely.
