Amy Winehouse’s final recording is finally here—her duet with Tony Bennett, “Body and Soul,†has been released. And it’s good.
As you all have probably noticed, we’ve all but exhausted coverage of Amy Winehouse. While there is still more of the story to be told (the inquest into her death begins in October), maybe it’s time to pause and get back to the music.
Winehouse had an amazing talent—her jazzy vocals were hard to match. She paved the way for artists like Adele and Duffy to hit the American airwaves, but it was always Amy that we came back to in the end. With only two albums under her belt, she somehow managed to win the world over.
Through her pain and her instability, beautiful music was born. While the tabloids laughed at her faults, everyone was secretly cheering her on, hoping she would clean herself up—at least I was, and it wasn’t so secret. Amy had a lot to live for, but sadly it ended too soon.
“Body and Soul†may not be the ideal closing number for a career, per-se—a true swan song, one would imagine, would be much more epic. Still, it’s Amy’s voice that truly drives the tune, and she blends amazingly well with Tony Bennett—even she said in an interview during the recording session that she was impressed at how well the ending of the song came together. The musical chemistry and the classic sound make the recording timeless, which is definitely more than anybody could ask for to end an era.
Below, listen to the track and remember Amy for who she was—an amazing singer who was destined to go down in history, not because of her untimely demise, but because of her strong talent and vocal abilities that easily outshine many current artists. While the world lost a star, we definitely gained a legend—and so be it if that’s a completely biased statement. The girl had a voice, and she deserves recognition for it. “Body and Soul†is a beautiful song in of itself, and Winehouse and Bennett obviously did it justice.
